I have a 1994 Chevy extended cab 4WD 1500 pickup with an intermittent problem with the windshield wipers. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. A friend of mine told me that he had a similar problem with a later model Surburban and what he had to do to make them work was to manually lift or jiggle the wiper arm assembly. They would start working then. I've been able to do this as well with some success. What's causing the problem and what can I do to permanently fix it?

there is a printed circuit board on the wiper motor that controls the intermittent, speed, ad park of the wiper motor. They are notorious for going bad and can be picked up from your local part supplier, like NAPA, Oreilly's, PepBoys...

It is possible you need new wiper blade refills for your wipers, if they have been affected by your sun and climate. Also, try getting some windshield stripper and clean the windshield with it.

I had to replace the wiper relay circuit board that is attached to the firewall. It was about $20-30 at Autozone and took me 10 minutes to swap it out.

Only wish I hadn't punched my windshield and broke it before hand.

what you are hearing is the gears in the wiper motor grinding usaly makes a kind of humming vibration and when they do work means thet caught part of the gear thats good. the you wiper motor assembly is woreout and u need a replacement. i hope this helps thanks for your timeand good luck

A 1996 Ford F150 Pickup 4WD is the same bolt pattern.

A 1996 GMC Pickup 1500 4WD Extended Cab 4x4 Long Box is not the same, 5 bolt / 127

Check for a loose fuse or loose wiring to the wiper. Also check for tight ground connection at the motor. The 'park' switch which completes each cycle may be intermittent. It might be a worn switch at the steering wheel.

2002 Windstar wipers would come on by themselves, or not work set on intermittent, driver door lock would not work sometimes, ABS and brake light would come on sometimes, the problem was in the park switch inside the wiper motor. I replaced with wrecking yard wiper motor $44.95 w/13 month warranty. no more problem. check how many pins on connector plug, mine had 5 on the wiper motor side.Take the wiper assembly off of the metal cowl, 2 nuts, & I bolt, it is easier to snap the actuator pieces off of the wiper motor that way. You will have to change the swich that control the wiper blades cause sometimes they go bad

idle air control motor on back of throttle body maybe malfunctioning and not allowing it to idle

check out the brake light switch located on the brake peddle. Could be out of adjustment or burned out.
