Convertible top will not retract

I parked the car and put the top up on a 90 degree day and when I returned and tried to put the top down it would only retract, first phase, and when I press the button to lower the top the light blinks and nothing happens. Could this be heat related, an electrical problem or what.

light blink top wont go down

I have a similiar, but different issue. It first appeared as "uneven partial retraction". The left side began retracting "slower" than the right side causing the whole top to "point" to the right. I immediately stopped the retraction after ~12 inches. I then "raised" the roof and was able to gently "guide" the left side back into a closed condition. The right side was already "on track" and closed by itself. Since then, I have tried to retract the top several times but the left side will not retract at all. Right side begins to retract normally.

Same thing happened, made a horrible noise and then would not go down with the left side above the driver window with visible problem. Took it to dealer and it is $2,700 to repair as the entire sunroof assembly cable system has to be replaced. Luckily I got an extended warranty and it's being covered, but has been there 3 days. It's a 2005 Convertible S. They have no idea why this happened.

Do you know where are the two levers on left and right side when open the tailgate? The one you open to raise the soft top from behind?
Well, one of them is not close tight enough. Open it up and close it back. There should be small click from the sensor. Sometimes the sensor won't get engaged and it won't allow opening the top, assuming it's open from the other side.

Check it out

I'm glad you got it working :)
I was there few months ago, trying to figure out the same thing. Everything was ok, from mechanics to fuses but the top just wouldn't go down. Anyway, glad it was just the Sensor and not something technical :) Enjoy your open air rides

I found out two weeks ago that the cables in my convertible top snapped and that it's a $3000 repair. I'm out of warranty by 8 months, and MINI USA said that's too far out of warranty to receive a good will gesture. I've found twenty-four postings on different websites with the same problem, so it seems the Mini has a design flaw. To make a stronger case to MINI USA and to help the others do the same, I'm trying to collect information from others who have posted about what year their car is and how much mileage they had when their cables snapped. If you've had this same problem, please send me an e-mail at so I can send you the information I have. When I get it all collected (hopefully in the next week), I'm happy to share the information with you.

Need to know how to put the top down on 96 mustang dont have manu

First thing to do is put the car in park and then set the parking brake. Next, release the drivers and passenger side handles (located at the top, above your head when you are sitting in the car, where the part of the top meets the windshield) Both handles are black and you simply pull the lever to release the hooks. After both hooks are released, push the button located near the speedometer (should be underneath the speedometer) on the dash and the top motor will engage and begain to retract the top. Hold the button untill the top disapears behing the back seat

How do you put the top down. I have a rental, and their is no owner's guide.

1.Empty the trunk of all contents
2.Park on a level surface and set parking brake, shift auto trans into Park or manual into R
3.Turn the ignition off.
4.Open the trunk.
5.Pull down the convertible top latch located above the rearview mirror and turn it counterclockwise to unlatch . Leave the latch open and turned to prevent damage.
6.Pull rearward on the side edge of the convertible top and pull it off of
the windshield frame.
7.Push the convertible top down into the trunk
8.After the top is stored, push on the convertible top to ensure that the top is fully retracted and securely stored.
9.Close thet runk by pressing down from the rear center of it with a swift, firm motion.

1999 vw cabrio convertible top doesn't works

You have to put hydraulic fluid (power steering fluid will work too) in the convertible top motor. The motor is in the trunk, on the left hand side, under a panel. Pull the panel off and that is the electric motor for the top. You'll see a reservoir where you put in the fluid. Put in the fluid and you'll be good to go.

Convertible top

make sure your car is in park and that you have your foot on the break....if you release your foot it will stop. So keep your foot on until it is fully open or fully closed and the passenger seat has returned to where you had it set prior to opening or closing
