Question about 1991 Honda Civic

Hard starting when I try to start the car first thing in the morning it turns over 4 or 5 times then starts, also have a problem sometimes when its hot. It starts hard and the engine light comes on but it eventually starts.

Hi if the engine light comes on you need to get the diagnostic tester to find out what the fault code is otherwise finding the fault can be a bit hit or miss and end up costing you more money then it might have you had the engined tuned [seviced] as this is the first thing to get done its the basics then look deeper if need be yates210456

When you go to start it up, instead of starting the vehicle on the first try, turn key on and then turn it back off. Wait a few seconds and repeat this about 3 or 4 times. If it now starts up at the next attempt, the fuel pressure regulator is either bad and letting the fuel back into the tank, or the fuel pump check valve is bad and doing the same thing.

I have a 2001 IS 300 with 160,000 mi. I was having trouble starting the car in the morning where it would take 2 or 3 tries to get it to turn over. It is in a garage in California, so not in extreme cold....


try if this works\improves your situation;

turn the key to ON but don't crank, let it sit for 2 seconds. Do this 2-3 times, then put it in the ON position, wait 2 seconds then crank. As for what it is, could be spark plugs, fuel pump\line issue, etc..

Sounds like it could be your coolant temp sensor. try disconecting the sensor in the morning before you crank it up. if it starts right away thats your problem

WHEN YOU PARK IT FOR THE LAST TIME OF THE DAY TRY PINCHING OFF THE RETURN LINE ( AT A RUBBER SECTION OF LINE ) AND LET IT SIT OVER NIGHT. IN THE MORNING UNPINCH THE LINE AND TRY TO START IT. SEE IF THAT DOES IT. THE ONLY THING LEFT IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU MAY HAVE A CHECK VALVE THAT ISNT HOLDING. IF THAT DOESNT DO IT THEN IT IS A DIFFERENT SYSTEM THAT IS CAUSING YOUR HARD START ISSUE.

Hard starts in the morning even though replaced most parts


Check the power to the cold start injector. (it's only going to have fire for a few sec. after the key is turned on). If the fire is good, replace the cold start injector. This injector is activated for a few seconds when the engen temp is low to add a little fuel lower down in the intake and closer to the pistons.

There could be a few things causing this. When the car finally starts, is there any smoke coming out the exhaust pipe? White smoke would mean your headgasket is leaking and is letting coolant into the engine, then it is burned along with the fuel. Does the car run hot? Meaning has it ever overheated? Back to the smoke, if its black, your oil is getting in and is burning.

Now, the reason why it would be hard for a car to start, could be, a leaking headgasket, flooding the car while the car is sitting.

And yes, the car would be able to crank, but just wont start, for a while...because it has to get rid of all that fluid that has leaked into the engine while sitting at night.

Another thing you could look at, is your fuel pump, is it supplying a sufficient amount of pressure? If it isnt, it will take a while for it to pressurize and deliver fuel into the engine. You can check the fuel pump yourself by renting a fuel pump pressure tool from stores like autozone, kragen and more.

Your gas cap on tightly?

Hard to start / engine rotates but wont start


check fuel pressure with a gauge,turn the key in the on position an read pressure ,if pressure goes lets say to 40 or 50 on one key cycle pump is prob. good . if it takes 3 to 4 key cycles to achieve this pressure ,pump is bad or connection in tank is bleeding off over night.

Try replacing the fuel and air filters, if it still doesn't work test your starter to make sure is working properly. if the problem persists, the fuel injector pump on the engine might need to be replaced
