You have said your car is an SL model, if it an SL or SL1 you will have the single overhead cam engine. There is a TSB from GM ablut heads that crack, I had a 96 SL1 that did the same thing, and I had to replace the cylinder head. Many people just put in a head gasket because it is so common on 4cyl cars. This will not fix your problem. What has happened is a presure galery that feeds oil to the cam on the head is cracked into a cooling passage, and the 45psi oil is being pulped slowly into the 15psi cooling system. You will probably need to replace rubber cooling and heater hoses as the oil will attack and weaken them, and set you up for possibly another problem down the road. I hope this was helpful.

Will tappets on a pontiac 3.8 start rattling after motor overheats?

it can if the motor got very hot. you may have poor oil quality from overheating. damaged valve lifters, damaged camshaft/bearings, oil pump, water in oil which can cause engine damage from overheating. it will have to be checked out to find what caused the overheating then the lose of oil pressure to cause the rattle.

#7 cylinder misfire after overheating

Look for water in the oil, steam in exhaust , and oil and or bubbles in the coolant resevoir. Suspect a blown head gasket. May try just changing that one spark plug. Sometimes overheating can cause a extreme lean condition which can burn a plug.

Engine overheat, A/C shut off, fan hot

Chances are that your engine is ok. Bad engine overheating can seize the engine. Less extensive overheating can crack the engine especially the cylinder head and lead to power loss or mixing of water and engine oil. If water is mixing with oil, the oil looks milky. If your car is not losing power and the oil looks normal then chances are that there was no damage to your engine.

Just make sure that whatever caused the overheating in the first place is sorted out - perhaps the radiator flushing resolved the cause of the overheating.

1997 cherokee sport will not start after overheating

If a car dies from overheating its not good. Quick check; pull the oil stick and see if the oil seems milky. Mess with it enough it will start. More than likely it has a blowed head gasket. You will see water out the exhaust while running. Good luck
