Hi there,

There are lots of things that can cause poor performance - I don't know what the size the fuel tank is on an Accord but I assume your getting about 20 Miles per Gallon and want better.

Typical things would be changing the air filter for easier air flow into the engine (Assumning its not been done recently),

Changing the spark plugs or reseting the gap to give you better spark and fuel burning.

Checking/reseting the timing on the engine to ensure your fuel ignition is happening at the right point in the combustion cycle such that fuel is getting into the combustion chambers at the right time and being ignited to its highest potential.

Checking all the vacuum hoses to ensure advance and ****** systems are working if this engine has those or if it is totally computer controlled ignition.

A 1990 probably has a lot of miles on it and there may be mechanical issues that are causing problems such as worn rings on the pistons. Are you getting blue smoke out of the back of the vehicle when it drives or can you smell burning oil in the exhaust ? its possible that you have worn rings and bores resulting in poor compression which would result in poor mileage. You could have the compression checked at a garage or go buy a compression tester and see. If thats the case it really needs reconditioning. I.E. rebore and new rings with over size pistons, but we are getting pricey for a car that age. An alternative treatment but not a very good one is something like STP - and engine aditive that tries to gum up the holes but they are really not that good and it may be as well to save the cash to wards the new car.

Do you have to drop the gas tank to change fuel pump on a 1990 honda accord ex?

I have read that there are 2 types of pups on the hondas, one is in the tank, the other on the firewall in front of the driver. You should be able to hear where the pump is when it goes on. To get to the one in the tank, just pull out the floor in the back and the spare tire, there is a panel there that exposes the pumps access. Disconnect the neg battery cable and relieve the fuel pressure. You should be all set.

How would i find the way into the fuel tank if i cant get though from the out side of my honda accord 1990.

Honda worked on our 01 accord and I noticed they were working on it from the top either under the seat or the under the panel in the trunk. I don't remember exactly what they were trying to accomplish at the time but perhaps this will help you find your way in.

How to check if fuel sending unit is bad on a 1990 jeep grand wagoneer and where the sending unit is at

the sending unit is no more than a variable resistor, u test it with an Ohm meter, the reading should move from either high to low ohms or low to high ohms, your gauge will most likely read empty if the sender is defective, while a GM car will read full. The sending unit is located in the fuel tank.

Fuel Consumption

A Honda Accord is a full size car/heavy and therefore would have high gas consumption, probably around 8~10 Km/L city driving. Highway would roughly be 10~12 depending on your driving habits.

A full tune-up of course would help which may include but not be limited to change of sparkplugs, adding car/injector cleaner to the tank, checking/replacing the air cleaner, double checking/cleaning/replacing the MAF (if it has got one).

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
