Question about 1998 Ford Ranger SuperCab

Fuel pump?? i have a 1998 ford ranger xlt, 3.0 ltr 2wdr and i went to start it yesterday, and it would only stay on for about 10 seconds. the engine would turn over, and it would start, but then would immediately cut off. it was making noises like it was out of gas. it was possible that it was, so i put approx. a gallon in the tank, and tied again and got the same results. everyone i have spoken to says they think it is the fuel pump, but i need to be sure before going and getting the pump. any ideas???

Try replacing the Air Flow Senser, it's the switch looking thing, to the right of the air filter box; I think it runs about $6-$10s. Good luck.

If you are that low in fuel might wanna put a little more in it if you parked at an angle or up/down hill it might not be picking up. Need to check the fuel pressure and go from there.

If fuel pressure is good then it is not the pump. probably gonna be an ignition problem need to see if your getting good spark

i would say fuel pump/filter, but to see if this is it, spray wd-40 into the intake and if acts like it wants to start then its a fuel issue, if not then ignition, I use wd-40 as it does not knock the engine. You may want to also check all your fuses. hope this helps Tim

I have an 87 ford ranger xlt 2.9. I just replaced both fuel pumps and now i went from 18mpg to 6.5 mpg. Can anyone tell me what could cause this.

somethings leaking, probably one of the hoses you disconnected at the fuel tank. as the 2nd fuel pump is in the fuel line and much easier to get to. that kind of drop in mileage would have to be a leak.

Are you sure you put the spark plug wires back on the correct plug? obviously a new set of plugs wont hurt a car, and if this happened after you did the plugs and it never did it before, i would say check the order of your wires,

first go to an auto partstore and have the code checked. most do it for free. could be coil, fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter or even a bad gas cap. but the dianogstic test should pin point the problem.

Check the MAP sensor and the fuel pressure at the shredder valve. Before you try to start the engine, cycle the ignition 3 times to the run position for 10 seconds apart and then try starting the car. You may be lossing the fuel pressure prime. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to hlep.

go to the passenger floor boad, up by the end of the transmission tunnel, pull the carpet back and you will find a fuel inertia switch attached to the passenger side of the transmission tunnel.
make sure it is plugged in, it is common for passengers to step on these wires and pull the plug.
if its plugged in than make sure the button on the top of the switch is fully depressed.

let me know if this helps
