Question about 1994 Toyota Tercel
Your shift linkage at the tranny is probably out oif adjustment. Disconect the linkage at the tranny and with the e-brake on have someone inside the car to make sure that it doesn't run you over. Then take the shift lever on the tranny and move it through the different gears. If it still does it then at least you've narrowed it down to the tranny.

Pop open the trunk and peel back liners so the upper strut mounts are seen, remove nuts from each strut mount. Jack up car and put stands under car to support it. Let rear suspension drop down and upper part of struts should come out of thier holes. And last of all remove bolts holding each strut and they wil fall out on the ground.
Reverse process to install.
