How to take a tie rod end off without a pickle fork

On your tie rod end loosen nut untill it is almost all the way off
then get a heavy hammer and hit the housing around the bolt shaft
that will let the tie rod end fall out or release pressure do not hit the bolt shaft
only housing around it

Sounds like the tie rod is bad. Easyest way to tell is to jack up car on that side until tire is off the ground. tie rod end will pivot from side to side,this is normal but if it moves up and down this would indicate that it is bad. If it is please replace as soon as you can for this is very dangerous. If it would come apart you would lose control of car..Now replacing it is not that hard of a job. First remove pin that runs through bolt on bottom of tie rod. Then remove nut. Now the tie rod end has splines on it that holds it into place and just trying to pull it out doesnt work. Place something like large screwdriver or pry bar between tie rod end and where in goes into assemble. Now while prying down use a hammer and hit the side of assemble where tie rod bolt goes through. may have to hit it quite hard and remember keep prying down while you do this. It will simply pop up out of assembly. Please do not hit bottom of bolt to try to pop it out for this in alot of cases will smash end of bolt and cause it to flare out making it hard to pull out once loose. Now that it is out you will need to take it loose from the arm. Use a pair of vise grips of pipe wrench to hold arm and loosen set nut behind tie rod end and screw tie rod out. replace with new one ,tighten nut,put tie rod end into hole but on nut and tighten then be sure to put pin through bolt,may have to turn nut to line it pin up with hole. When pin is through bend it out around nut. The pin is what keeps the nut from coming loose...Hey your done...Anytime you replace a tie rod end you will need to have your car realined.......please rate this post and good luck and hope the info is helpful

can't get the front left cv off, i've undun the main hub nut (centre) broken the metal bands on both ends of the shaft not sure if i need to take off the whole front hub off to get out the Manuel doesn't give enough info, have done cv's on other cars an had no prob's, was looking for a cir clip but don't see one


You need to detach the ball joint and tie rod end so you can pull the hub away from the car to give you enough room to remove the end of the shaft from the hub.

Pull the cotter pin out of the tie rod end, then loosen the nut. Hit the tie rod end with a hammer and it will pop out. You need to give it a solid hit with the hammer.

There will be some nuts or screws on the bottom of the ball joint. Remove those screws/nuts.
Then pry the ball joint up until it pops loose and then you can pull the hub away from the shaft to remove the axle.

how do i change tie rod ends outter?


Remove carter pin from nut.
remove nut
use tierod end splitter to knock it loose.
loosen nuts on sleve
count how many turns out untill it comes off
count same number of turns in
get a front eny aligment

I can't get the tie rod ends off of my 1990 Oldsmobile Regency.


grab the tie rod end very tite with vice grips. loosen clamp on tie rod near ball joint fit wrench or more vice grips on ball joint. try to turn the tie rod it would help to soak the threads awhile with w-d 40 or heat the tie rod where it screws in the bal joint with a propane or some type torch. before removing the tie rod count the number of turns it takes to get it out so when you put it back your front end will still be aligned. i believe it would be smart to knock the tie rod end loose before anything else. remove cottre pi and nut from bottom of tie rod end. you can use a tie rod separator that looks like afuning fork or just crawl under the ****** and beat the hell out of the tie rod bolt,not always easy,use heavy hammer.dont beat the bolt if you plan to reuse the tie rod end cause you'll never get a nut back on it. most rental shops have tie rod seperators auto zone loans them usually. good luck from sunny austin fx

ball joint replacement tips


use new cotter pins... at the other end of the tie rod you will see a bolt. use vice grips to make sure that shaft does not turn.. and back off the bolt about one or two turns use some needle nose pliers to pull the one side of the cotter pin even so you can pull it out. undo the bolt and tap the tie rod with a hammer to loosen it.
now... when you unscrew the tie rod from the shaft... count the turns until it come off. screw the new tie rod back onto the shaft the same number of times. after that is done.... reassemble it and tighten the bolt on the other end of the tie rod.


don't forget to grease the tie rod (if there is a fitting)
