Tip & How-To about BMW 318

Hard to open door on BMW 3 series

Basically, whats happened is that the cable that opperates the opening mechanism has become streched and subsequently slack rendering your door unopenable over time. A dealership will charge you an arm and a leg to fix this but its really quit easy and only takes two minutes.

1 open the offening door.
2 look at the side of the door for a small rubber/plastic cap.
3 pop it out with a flat head screw driver.
4 look inside to reveil a "Allen key" bolt.
5 put in your "Allen key" and turn clockwise to tighten the inter cable or left to loosen....... remember ! RIGHTIE TIGHTIE, LEFTIE LOOSIE :)

It really is that simple! and remember, Practice and enjoy.

gas tank door wont open

90% chance the cable is streched...so...this is what you do....take a small pair of needle nose pliers.....locate the cable that is on the plastic handle...it's gonna have a little metal crimp on it....and simply pull on it...that should release it for ya....hopefully the cable isn't broke...they normally just strech

My 1999 pontiac montana rear sliding power door will not work

hi there,

this can be stuck contacts on the door. better to check the sliding contact point for any dirt debris on the slide or it may need some lubricant for easily sliding.

window wont auto lower or rise to open door

my guess is the door lock mechanism is faulty.if the window control unit does not see a signal for the door being opened it will not raise or lower the window...does the interior light opperate when the door is opened???.if not you can put money on it being the mechanism.

My 1993 toyota pickup's hood release wont open the hood. The cable still has tension on it but the inside release is loose & flops up & down.Any suggestions.Thank you!

Stretched or frayed cable, or possible mechanism seized or broken. Try looking up under hood in latch area, as someone pulls cable lever inside, & watch what happens. You may see a piece getting pulled , and be able to get to it with a screwdriver to assist it in going further to open the latch. Then inspect cable close for conditions I mentioned above. You may be able to tighten up the slack (adjust) once the hood is up, otherwise a new cable may be necessary. If worse comes to worse, you may have to grab that slack in the cable with a pair of vise grips & give a little more pull to get it unlatched. Make sure you lube the mechanism under hood too.

Have a 1990 miata ,interior lights don't work all fuses are good?

I haven't had a Miata so I'm not sure of the set up, but basically the two areas you can check are;-

1/. the bulb in the interior light to see if its blown and if so replace it.

2/. the door switches that usually opperate the light when the doors are opened.

Usually the doors have a push button switch that keeps an open circuit when the door is closed and the button is depressed, keeping the contacts apart, and when you open the door the spring loaded button switch pushes out and closes the contacts for the lighting circuit.

There is a switch to detect the door opening on each side, but on a car of this age its possible that they are both corroded and so not making a closed circuit when the doors are opened due to the corrosion of the contacts i the switch or that the switches are worn and not operating when the door is opened.

You can lube up the switches by spraying with WD40 and see if they get better. You may need to take them out and check the circuit by closing the wires to the body of the car and seeing if the light comes on (assuming the bulb is good to start). And if that is not the case then it becomes a nighmare of tracing the wiring though the car and checking the connections at the other end.

Worst comes to the worst a manual for the Miata can be bought at Autozone or Peb Boys or one of the many car supply shops and it will show you the wiring diagram for the doors so you can see where the other end of the door switch cable should be connected.
Basically if its not fixed by replacing the bulb or making sure the door switches are working it gets a lot more complex and may not be worth the effort.

So check there first and see if you can get a light at all

Hope that helps
