Tip & How-To about Ford Taurus

How to raise a car door electric window when it is stuck down

Frequently when an older car's electric window stops working the problem is a symptom of a faulty switch or failing motor. Follow this tip to temporarily resume the operation of your electric window if the window has an "auto" feature that rolls the window all the way up or all the way down by holding the button.

Step 1. Locate a rubber mallet or heavy soft object that will not scratch or break an item when you use it.
Step 2. Turn the car to on position so that all accessories are working including the other windows. Hold the button in the up position (if window is stuck down) or in the down position (if window is stuck in up position).
Step 3. In the center of the inside door panel with the door open, strike the door rapidly two or three times as if you were pounding your fist on a table.

If the window starts moving, it will likely continue to work for some time and this tip can be repeated until a permanent repair is required.

My blinkers stopped working on my Mazda 323 1996,when you turn on the wipers the left indicator light comes on the dash only. I have checked the bulbs and it is not a fuse either, could itloose wire?

Alex, could be a pinched/short in wire, probable the multi function/signal switch is faulty and may need replaced or you may try taking it apart and clean contacts, etc. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

I have no idea why the window only goes down.

Michael, Inside the window switch are copper contacts that do wear, corrode and become defective. the switch still could be defective even though it works for going down.
Test the switch with a DVOM or test light.
You can google search your particular vehicle for more info on diagnosing power window problems.

Electric Windows have stopped working. Fuse hasnt blown for them. Is there an easy way to have them work or test motors?

There's a couple of things you can check right off the bat if you're sure the fuse hasn't blown.
  • The first thing I would check is the window lock switch. Most cars have a window lock switch near the driver's master controls for all the windows. This switch can accidentally get turned on, locking all the windows from operating.
  • It that's not it, have all the windows stopped working or is it just one window? If it's all of the windows that have stopped working, chances are, not all of the motors have failed at the same time. That would mean that it's most likely the driver's master window switch that has failed.

I have a 2002 4-door Envoy extended length. Three years ago the rear HVAC stopped working; 6 months ago the left rear electric window stopped working; yesterday the right rear electric window stopped working. Is there a common link here?

I doubt there is a common cause. The rear HVAC needs to be diagnosed by a HVAC technician. The electric windows problem is probably a bad motor in the door. Do the rear windows work from the driver's controls? If they do, then it is the window switch that is faulty.

electric window stops working then starts

THE WINDOW SWITCH IS A POSSIBLE CAUSE ALSO THE WINDOW MOTOR HAS A CIRCUIT BREAKER BUILT INTO IT AND CAN CAUSE THE SAME SYMPTOMS. USING A TEST LIGHT AT THE WINDOW MOTOR CONNECTOR, LOOP THE TEST LAMP TO THE TERMINALS TO TEST THE SWITCH OPERATION. IF IT WORKS IN BOTH DIRECTIONS CONSISTENTLY THE PROBLEM IS IN THE WINDOW MOTOR.
