How to use an On Board Diagnostic (OBD II) scanner tool

When your orange check engine light comes on and stays lit inside your instrument cluster the best thing to do is find out why it has come on and what part you will need to replace on your vehicle. Using an OBD II scanner tool is the first thing you should do before you start to repair or spend any money on your vehicle. The best thing about using this electronic tool is there is no charge to use it! Most major auto parts stores carry a "loaner" that you can borrow for free and use right outside in there parking lot. So after you drive to the auto parts store and borrow the tool from the store employee, head back to your vehicle and open up your drivers side door. After you open the door, get on your knees and locate the access port underneath the drivers side steering wheel. This port looks like the old printer cable serial ports found on ink jet printers before everything switched over to the USB cable. Connect the black cable to and then turn your vehicle on. After your vehicle starts and is running, turn the power button on the scan tool. Press the ok button and the tool will began to communicate with your vehicles ECM (vehicle computer) After a minute has passed, some numbers will show up on the scan tool screen. Write these numbers down (there may be more then one set of error code letters and numbers displayed) Now that you have the numbers, clear the vehicle computer using the tools options. Your check engine light will go off and stay off but will come back on if you don't fix the problem, Before you drive away, go back inside and return the tool to the clerk. Now look inside the store for a Haynes repair manual and find the make and model of your vehicle. Inside the back of this manual is a list of trouble code numbers and what each number stands for in relation to the part that has failed on your vehicle. Now that you know what component has failed, you can eliminate the guess work and order the correct part without spending lots of money buying the parts you don't need. Another thing is you just saved $50 or more on labor charges that a repair shop would charge you to find out the same information you just learned for free!

Is the charge indicator lit , or battery symbol lit on the instrument cluster ? The charging system on your vehicle is computer controlled . Do you know how to do automotive electrical system testing ? Test for B+ voltage at the alternator connections . Heavy gage wire on the back of the alternator should have B+ voltage ,plus pin #3 at the connector should also have B+ voltage . Your best bet , take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop .

my 1996 Buick Skylark engine turns over but will not stay started

Is there a SECURITY light lit on the instrument cluster ? What's the fuel pressure at ? Do you know how to test fuel pressure ? Does the check engine light come on when turning the key to run ,not start just the run position ? Did you try holding the gas pedal down a little way ? Go to you tube an check out videos on trouble shooting , engine won't keep running .

Can the ignition lock cylinder have anything to do with the instrument Gage's electric windows, and heat and cooling not working

the wires you bypass are tiny white wires inside an orange or black sleeve.
the ignition switch has more than one output, it is the likely culprit for your issue with the things that are not working, the switch is not where the key goes in, it is on the top of the steering column near the bottom half.

1999 Oldsmobile Alero Gauge problem

Could be lose connection on the back of the instrument cluster ,which means you would need to pull it out of the vehicle . Check pin fit to instrument cluster . for the B+ voltage suppy an ground connection's .
You said autozone - Tried to have auto zone diagnose from inside the car, came up with no codes. That's in the PCM - engine computer . There scan tool will not communicate with the instrument cluster ,which is also a computer in it's self. Need a factory scan tool to check instrument cluster.
Speedometer and/or Odometer Inaccurate
Important: A short to ground will cause an open fuse(s). Before performing this diagnostic procedure, inspect the fuse(s) for an open.
Did you perform the Instrument Cluster System Check?
Go to Step 2
Go to Instrument Cluster System Check
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
With the scan tool select Instrument Panel Cluster, Special Functions, Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) gauges.
Perform the Speed Gauge Sweep Test.
Does the speedometer complete a full sweep when commanded?
Go to Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Engine Controls
Go to Step 3
Replace the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .
Did you complete the repair?
Go to Instrument Cluster System Check
With a scan tool select the instrument panel cluster, data display, gear status.
Monitor the gear range status.
Move the gear lever through each gear.
Does the scan tool display the correct gear selected?
Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop .

1995 Toyota V6 Battery light on instrument cluster stays on

The battery light comes on if the battery voltage is too low. Check you battery voltage. It should be above 12V with the engine running. If not, the alternator is not working. Next, check if there is power on the FIELD terminal of the alternator. Again, you should have 12+V. Check if the Alternator fuse is blown.
