Tip & How-To about Chevrolet 2500

How to fix a transmission that has to be warm to go into gear.

If you have a vehicle that takes a really long time to shift into gear or has to be really warmed up to shift into gear then you can try this tip to give you a little more use out of the transmission:

Pour a few cap fulls of break fluid into the transmission fill tube and into the tranny. This will swell the seals in the transmission and allow it to shift into gear much quicker. Do not use this if your transmission is working properly. This is a band aid to extend thelife of your tranny before replacement. Do not use too much break fluid as this can cause the seals to burst.

Why is my gear shift so hard to move??

I believe your clutch is not disengaging fully. When this happens it may be hard to get into first gear but subsequet shifts are easier due to the fact the vehicle is moving. You probably have a hydraulic clutch system which is low on fluid or may have air in the system. Before shifting into first gear or reverse try pumping the clutch pedal 5 or 6 times then shifting, if it goes into gear easier after this then you probably have air in the system, it can be bled similar to bleeding brakes. If this doesnt work you might be low on fluid, or have a bad master or slave cylinder.

Why does my transmission shudder at a stop and why does it have trouble shifting up?

A waste of time flushing the transmission fluid, the fluid lasts for the life of the vehicle and beyond!
I suspect oil pressure issues if electronic or slipping clutches if mechanical.
Take it in for service.

it takes a long time and high rpm's to shift gears in my 1983 fleetwood. What could be the problem

It is possible that you are low on transmission fluid. Does it go into gear easily once it is warmed up? If so that is more than likely your problem. Let your car warm up for a while, then with the vehicle running and in park check the fluid level on the dipstick. When the vehicle is warm the fluid should be in the middle of the safe area on the dipstick.

bmw x5 slow gear change

this is normal to some extent to try and warm up the tranny to opp temperature as soon as possible. make sure the vehicle had the latest software installed in the transmission as this could also cause a delayed shift when cold.

Will not shift out of park until warm

There is a shift interlock solenoid under the center consule. Try putting the ignition key with the car off in between off and crank position. Then put the car in neutral start the vehicle and engage gear selector normally. however you would have to do this every time the car is turned off. if that works try unplugging the solenoid itself. you woill have to take the top off off the shifter assembly< (not hard though) the car will operate fine without solenoid hooked up but you WILL LOOSE the safety aspect of the way it was origanally designed hope this helps GOOD LUCK and GOD BLESS AMERICA
