How To Remove A Manual Transmission From A 1986-92 VW Jetta/Golf

Disconnect and remove the battery. Remove the axleshaft nuts on the spindle and remove the 6 splined bolts holding the axleshaft to the transmission yoke. Jack the car up 1-2 feet. You'll need to support the motor with a jack or jack stand. Drain the transmission, there is a 17mm allen plug at the bottom of the housing. The filler plug is on the right end of the transmission, (17mm allen plug also) to the right of the throw out bearing housing plug, that says VW on it. Remove the axleshafts. Unplug the back up switch. Remove the starter, that will also disconnect the motor/transmission mount. Disconnect the clutch cable and shifter linkage attached to the transmission. Remove the speedometer cable. Unbolt the rear transmission mount (17mm bolt going vertically down, a real long extension will help to get to that one) and bracket going to the end of the transmission at the top, 2, 17mm bolts with nuts. Remove the bracket. Remove the lower inspection sheild, 3, 11mm bolts. From the underneath side, on the other side of the motor where the transmission joins the motor, there is a 19mm bolt holding the transmission to the block, remove that, and also remove the small inspection plate above there, 2, 10mm bolts. Unbolt the two top bellhousing bolts, and it's ready to remove, pull the transmission away from the motor 2-4 inches to clear the input shaft from the clutch disc, you'll have to kind of turn and twist the transmission to get the transmission to clear the sub frame. Also moving the engine up or down will also help. The transmission weighs about 70 pounds.

You need a lift, a hanger to hold the engine from the top a transmission jack and about 5 hrs.Disconnect battery. hang the engine from the support hanger. Remove front wheels. loosen and remove axle nuts. Loosen spindles and disconnect tie rod ends. Disconnect ABS sensors. Remove the axles. Disconnect everything from the subframe if equipped. Disconnect the transmission mount and drop the engine down to access the bell housing bolts. Remove bolts, after disconnecting all electrical and clutch controls. Support the transmission with a jack and remove. Reverse process to install.

I NEED THE STEPS OF TAKING OUT A TRANSMISSION OUT OF MY 1994 HONDA ACCORD


  1. Remove the hub cap and bolt the wheel back in.
  2. Punch out the spindle nut lock and loosen the spindle nut.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle and block the rear tires.
  4. Remove the wheel.
  5. Drain the transmission.
  6. Remove the all the damper fork nuts and all the brake hose nuts on the damper fork and on the shock absorber.
  7. Remove the damper fork.
  8. Remove the driver side and passenger side front suspension flange nut inside the engine bay and slide the upper arm out
  9. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the passenger side and remove the passenger drive shaft spline from the hub.
  10. Separate the inner driveshaft from the transmission with a large screw driver (or crow bar).
  11. Remove the passenger side drive shaft. Do not pull.
  12. Remove the front radius rod.

Under the car.

  1. Remove the center beam.
  2. Remove the torque converter cover, the control cable holder and remove shift control cable.
  3. Remove the drive plate bolts and four transmission housing bolts.

Inside the engine bay.

  1. Place a transmission jack or several small jacks under the transmission.
  2. Disconnect all the electrical connectors.
  3. Remove the speed sensor gear shaft but leave the hoses on.
  4. Remove the distributor and mark the distributor shaft with a razor or a diamond etcher, usually on the head side or both.
  5. Remove the throttle control lever cable.
  6. Remove the transmission cooler hoses mounting bolts and their 4 washers.
  7. Remove the starter.
  8. Remove the all the transmission housing bolts.
  9. If the transmission won't come out remove a horizontal side engine mounting bolt and raise oil pan (with a wooden block between the oil pan and jack) until the transmission clears.
  10. Lower the transmission into the transmission jack.
  11. With the driver side front suspension flange out of the way, turn the steering towards the right then remove the driver side inner drive shaft with a large flathead screw driver.
  12. Lower the low profile transmission jack and slide the transmission and the jack from under the car. Don't loose the two dowel pins.
  13. Block all transmission fluid ports from leakage and dust and dirt.
  14. If repairs are being done repair the transmission in a dust, sand free environment.

You'll need to remove the caliper and rotor, remove the axleshaft nut, disconnect the ABS sensor wire. Remove the nut holding on the tierod, and disconnect the tierod end, a Pickle Fork will help remove the tierod end and seperating the ball joints. Remove the upper and lower balljoint cotter pins and nuts, seperate the upper and lower balljoints and remove the spindle. The hub is bolted to the spindle from the back with 3 bolts. You maybe need to have the hub pressed out.

Disconnect the battery.remove the front tires.disconnect the lower control arms from the hubs.Remove the axle nuts.Swing away the hub until it clears the end of the drive axle spline.Keep it to the side.Remove the drive axles. remove the starter.remove the torque converter bolts on the flywheel.disconnect the gear linkage and all electrical connectors.disconnect the transmission cooler lines. undo the transmission mounts. use a transmission jack to lower the transmission.Installation is the reverse of the above.Be sure to torque all bolts and nuts to spec,pre load the mounts and replace the cotter pins with new ones.it should take about 5 hours to re and re the transmission.

Is it hard to replce a Tranny in a 1986 VW Golf, also can this be done on the ground? I am a ase Treachnican , but never worked on VW . Chris
