Tip & How-To about Honda Civic

Advice about removing check engine lights

Disconnecting the battery for one minute will erase the code and reset the light.
If the light was caused by a loose gas cap,it will not come on again unless the problem is still there .
If the light does come back on ,run a diagnostic scan to determine what the cause is.
The maintainance required light is different, that one to reset involves holding in the trip odometer button and while keeping it pushed, turn on the ignition to the last position before "start".in a couple seconds the light will flash and about ten seconds later the maintainance required light will go out.
Turn off the ignition and it is reset.

2009 Mazda 5 check engine light after loose gas cap

If the code would have been due to the cap problem then the code will go away. Try resetting the code. Also try diagnosing again after disconnecting the battery and then reconnecting it after a few minutes.

My check engine light came on yesterday and after taking it to get the code , it was for the gas cap. I filled it up with gas and replaced the cap tightly. How do I get the light off.

It depends on the make and model of the vehicle. Some newer vehicles, once the car is driven with the cap loose, or the seal wears to the point of leaking pressure causing the light to come on, you must take it to the dealer or service center to get the light reset. You can try unhooking your negative battery cable for a few minutes to see if that erases the engine light.

The engine light came on and the gas cap was loose, now the light won't go off, can you tell me how to reset the computer without disconnecting the battery cables ? it is a 2004 Sebring, V6

need a diagnosis tool, reset codes from it--autozone can do this for free. sometimes the code will go away after X miles of driving. This is a OBDIII issue, again a Tech II or scan tool can erase the code.
