Tip & How-To about Cars & Trucks

Most vehicles today come with many added luxuries and accommodation's , a few of which i might add can cause severe issues such as the tilt steering column . over time and use they are taken for granted and i can assure you the tilt steering can cause many issues as it controls the 4 ways the turn signals the headlights the cruise control the windshield wipers , included issues related to the brake lights as well most every thing power to this above mentioned and explained . even though its an added luxury and should under any and all circumstances preform without issues , it without doubt will over the continued use of this feature breakdown ...my suggestion is use it sparingly and with actually holding the wheel while allowing it up or down to the proper fit of the driver , many drivers i have seen simply hit the lever and let it fly full speed into the 'let me outta here" position by flipping the lever allowing the wheel to at full force go into the upward position , and without regard to the bending of the wires within the column as well as the same way with jump in grab the lever and pull it into position ( Remember these wires are very, very Thin Extremely Thin )...I can " Guarantee " you within 1 year or less of using the tilt feature in this manor will result in Inoperable function to 1 or more or all of my above mentioned functions . My suggestion for the proper use is slowly and with ease lower or raise your tilt wheel into position ...then i give it a much less chance of a breakdown than would be in any other form of use . however you can buy direct from the manufacturer ,aftermarket ,salvage /used with the added cost of a repair shop as well as their hourly rate ,added time to get the vehicle there plus gas plus mileage plus aggravation as this "sometimes occurs " .. "always" with so many issues while there as door dings and theft if ..well lets just say why not just take the time in caring for your vehicle as you have worked so hard for it, I don't know i think "treating" my family or myself to a nice dinner instead of the added auto-repair bill off my plate is a mere few inches away from my finger-tips is much more worth the 1 thought every time i get into my vehicle ...like a fine oiled machine and running perfect ...

what is overdrive

In an era when different models of car with different wheel sizes could be accommodated by simply changing the final drive ratio, it made sense for all transmissions to use direct drive as the highest gear. As noted earlier, however, this would cause the engine to operate at too high an RPM for efficient cruising. Although adding the cruising gear to the main gearbox was possible, it was generally simpler to add a separate two-gear overdrive system to the existing gearbox. This not only meant that it could be tuned for different vehicles, but had the additional advantage that it could be offered as an option, which was easy to add

I think my son hit something to cause the transmission fluid to all leak out...there is a stream from my house to where the vehicle quit and a puddle underneath...i see where to check the fluid, but not where to add fluid to the vehicle.

You will need to look under the vehicle at the transmission and verify if there is transmission case damage,a broken transmission line ect. if your son ran over something and you can see the damage then adding fluid will cause it to just leak back out of the case. You will probably need it to be towed to the mechanic if that is the case. If you try and drive it in that condition you may cause permanent damage to the vehicle's tranny. And transmission fluid is usually added in the same tube that contains the dip stick to check the level of the fluid. Also power steering fluid will also look like transmission fluid and could be a power steering leak.
