Tip & How-To about Chevrolet Cavalier

Stop pumping fuel

Are you bad about trying to pack your fuel tank, if you are your causing more problems for yourself. Here's why the fuel in your tank is only made to go so far, so when you keep pumping, the fuel level gets over the range it should be, so then the overflow of fuel goes threw the charcoal canister that is used for venting your tank, then it brings this charcoal back to your tank. Then it travels threw your fuel pump, your fuel filter and fuel injectors causing clogs and pump to wear out early. So when you get that first click at the gas pump, STOP Don't put anymore fuel in.

The prevalent cause is the fouling of the O2 sensors in the exhaust pipe and the catalytic convertor(s). This usually caused by the fuel not burning correctly in the combustion chamber. And this can be caused by: bad/no spark in combustion chamber due to weak plugs or electrical going plug coil packs; partially plugged fuel injectors and result being too much un aspirated fuel entering the combustion chamber; bad or old fuel, improper fuel octane for engine.

Suggest you fuel up asap with PREMIUM fuel (for 1 tank) and 1 can super concentrated injector cleaner for next 2 tanks. Check air filter clean. Check air intact air analyser sensor wire is clean, pull the plugs and check condition and gap, replace them if fouled or worn.

Car turns over but wont start what is wrong?

The car is either not getting gas or not getting spark. It could be a weak battery, bad spark plugs or wires, bad coil pack/distributor, clogged fuel filter or spark plugs, or a defective fuel pump. These are the most common causes of this problem and and except the fuel pump and sometime fuel filter are relatively easy to replace yourself. Good luck and happy hunting!

Have a 1994 Volvo 960...sputtered & died with 1/2 a tank of gas. Wants to turn over but sounds like it is out of gas. Replaced the fuel filter, no luck. Battery is new...Please help!

well fuel and spark is all that makes them run,So make sure your getting spark first! if you have spark to plugs then it will be fuel related... 9 times out of 10 if your not getting fuel it will be the fuel pump( in gas tank ) and 9 times out of 10 if you don't have spark its the coil or coil pack( under hood.) but it can be other fuel/spark components bad also...if you can do the work yourself, have a dealer tell you what parts bad(will cost about $100.00 to run a diagnostics on it.) then go to auto-zone,napa,ect. and buy the part and replace.....if you can not do the work yourself then you will have to let dealer or mechanic shop do the work. make sure once you know what parts bad to get a price from 3-different places to get best price......good luck...

Hard to start when engine is warm

Don't replace the fuel pump. More than likely it is your coil pack. As they start to go bad the heat will cause them to not work properly until they cool down. Replace the pack and that should fix your problems and save you some $ on the fuel pump. Good luck. Thanks for rating my response and for using FixYa!
