Shocks and struts

When it comes to shocks and suspension, many people are confused as to what the shocks on their vehicle do. The job of the shock is to slow down and damp the movement of the body on the wheel. The real function of shock absorbers are to: 1) Prevent bottoming, that is slowing down the compression of the spring and create lifting force on the wheel.
2}Prevent the tires from bouncing up and down on bumps and absorb some of the energy.
3)Keep the vehicle from bouncing up and down on the springs before settling down.
I’ve put together a few simple tests you can do even if you have no mechanical knowledge about your Lexus at all. The same principle applies for strut suspension.
1}Push your weight down on the front or rear of your Lexus and release .The vehicle should bounce up and settle down. If it continues to bounce the shocks are worn out.
2)Drive over a small bump at a speed of 20 mph and the wheel should lift to it and settle down without a thud.(the thud is the rubber snubber)
3)At 60 mph the vehicle should rise and fall quickly over a dip, then stabilize itself after 2 rebounds..If it does not the vehicle will feel like it is floating and this makes the steering very unstable.
4)On rough roads does your vehicle shake and vibrate after you go a short distance? Well if it does, it is because the oil in the shock is overheating and starting to foam. That problem can be corrected with a nitrogen gas shock.
5)The last is to look at the shock or strut and see if it is leaking oil, if so it has no compression or rebound.
If your Lexus failed any of these tests either the shocks are worn out are mismatched for your vehicle. Some of the best shocks and struts on the market are Bilstein’s Monroe, and KYBs . And remember that maintaining the shocks and or struts on your Lexus is very important to the handling and tire wear on any Lexus.

    Does This Car Have Rear "Struts" Or Shocks?? What Is the Difference?


    THe 93 Mazda has both actually. The shock absorber in this car is just one component of the so called strut assembly. Read on if you want the details: Shock absorbers are simple suspension dampers that control the unwanted spring motion of the vehicle's frame caused by the suspension's springs. Struts, or strut assemblies, basically does the same thing, although they are used on a different type of suspension system and performs another function, which is to provide support for the suspension system.

    A strut assembly is composed basically of a shock absorber unit, a coil spring, an upper pivot, and a lower control arm. A lot of vehicles today make use of strut assemblies instead of simple shock absorbers for the suspension system. The most popular of these strut assemblies is the MacPherson Strut for the front suspension and its rear suspension counterpart, the Chapman Strut.

    koumer: Shocks are not replaced base off of mileage or age, they are replaced based off of they way they perform. They are designed to dampen the suspension movement.
    In short, if you push down on the vehicle, and bounce it, you should feel some resistance and the vehicle shouldn't just jump up and bounce around. Usually, you will hear a kind of kushhh sound from the shocks when they are in motion. You also can look at them.
    Where the bright silver part (piston) comes out of the cylinder, it should be dry and free of oil. If there is oil accumulated around the area where the piston enters the cylinder, the shock is on it's way out or it has failed.
    I hope I haven't been confusing in my explanation.

    i have a2001 cherokee sport changed upper &lower ball joints,shocks sway bar end links and bushings. rear shocks,sway bar end links & bushings also,but i still get a clunking noise in the rear of the vehicle any help? thanks


    Clunking noise in the rear of the vehicle is a broad statement. When is the vehicle doing it? Is it all the time or just over bumps? Is it happening only going around curves? Is it a constant bump that speeds up and slows down with the vehicle speed. You would be supprised how many clunking noises can come from the driveline not the suspension. It could be anything from a bushing to your rear differential getting ready to grenade.

    This is a dangerous job if you do not have the proper equipment for compressing the spring that is around the rear shock. I do not recomend performing this job without the proper equipment. Unloading the spring without it compressed can cuase injury.

    If you have the proper equipment this is how you do it.

    REMOVAL - SHOCK ASSEMBLY NOTE: Access for the nuts attaching the rear shock assembly upper mount to the vehicle is through the inside of the trunk.
    1. Roll back carpeting on top of the rear shock tower to access shock mounting nuts.
    2. Remove plastic cover from the top of the shock assembly.
    3. Remove 2 nuts attaching the shock assembly upper mount/spring seat to the shock tower.
    4. Raise vehicle on jackstands or centered on a frame contact type hoist.
    5. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly from the vehicle.
    6. Remove two fasteners holding the splash shield to the shock assembly upper mount.
    7. Remove bolt attaching shock absorber to rear knuckle
    8. Remove the shock absorber from the rear knuckle first when removing the shock absorber from vehicle by pushing down on the rear suspension.
    9. Move shock assembly downward and tilt top of shock outward, then remove shock assembly from vehicle through top of wheel opening.
