Tip & How-To about Honda Civic

How to test the thermostat on your car

Hi, if you car's heater is only blowing cold or your car is over heating then the chances are your thermostat has failed.

To test your thermostat you need to remove the thermostat from your car to do this follow your own cars manual then once you have this removed you need to fill a plastic tub with boiling water from the kettle and then place your thermostat into the water.

If your thermostat is working you will see that the part where the spring is will open up to allow water to run through the thermostat if it fails to open then you need to get it replaced if it does open then your car has other problems.
The other problems could be blown head gasket for this you would need to use an workshop manual to do the work yourself or if you are unsure what you are doing or if you have not done this work before then please leave it to a pro

Does it blow air at all when you turn it on? If so, then it may be the thermostat or your heater hose. Try checking those. They're two of the most common reasons why a heater will blow cold.

my mini cooper is blowing cold air inside when the car is hot and it start overheating

Clarence,
your mini-cooper may just need a new thermostat. if the thermostat in your car is the original, then 4 years is a goodly amount of time for any thermostat to last. Thermostats fail in 2 ways: (A) stuck open, which causes engine to warm really slowly, and (b) stuck closed, causing overheating and
causing the heater to blow cold air - since the heated coolant can't get past the closed thermostat to
circulate through the heater core (a small radiator-like device used to heat the interior of your car).
Your car's thermostat has failed in mode (B).
Your cost: $5-$15 at any auto parts store.
Project complexity: any handy person could teach themselves to replace a thermostat.

Heater blows cold air

Heater core could be blocked up, or the blend door is stuck on the cold side of the a/c evaporator or the blend door is stuck in the cold position.

hi my rangerover heater is blowing out cold, everything else is working just the heater isnt...

Most likely your thermostat has failed and is stuck open. Engine coolant goes through the heater core and is used to heat the air that is blown into the cabin. If the thermostat fails, the coolant doesn't stay inside the engine long enough to absorb enough heat to make the climate control air blow hot. Change your thermostat (flush the coolant and have it replaced while you do this), and you should be back in business.
