Tip & How-To about Chevrolet C1500

How to get the bump out of your front end of your GMC or Chevy full size truck

If you have a full size GMC or Chevy pick-up you can get the bump feeling out of your steering. What you do to fix problem is pretty simple. First get your steering wheel strait. Then turn the wheel slighty to right so that the air bag is sitting vertical. Open hood and look for the steering shaft coming thru firewall. At the joint where two shafts meet will be a 15mm nut. Take nut loose and pull pin out of shafts. (Careful when removing nut the pin will fall out easliy). Once bolt is out carefully seperate shafts. (Note: be carefully not to let shaft rotate to much because it can damage air bag coil in steering wheel). Once shafts are apart stroke the shaft back and forth into firewall side of truck about 5 to 6 times. Reassemble and noise will be gone for another 20,000 to 40,000 miles.

I hit a bump in the road and now the truck pulls real bad to the right and the steering wheel shakes real bad at low speed and when I hit the brakes? 2000 gmc sonoma

check your wheel is on nice and tight. check that the yore has no bulges or damage to all sides.
If everything appears okay take it to a suspension/steering specialist for a look ....sounds like you may have suffered suspension damage.
Who is responsible for the maintenance of that road? I would consider contacting them for an inquiry about possible compensation for the cost of repair, they always fix the road pretty quickly after such inquiries!!!!!
Taking a photo of the offending bump might be advisable

2003 chevy steering colum has bumping sound @feeling.whitch shaft needs replaced. the upper or lower.

Not sure what type of Chevrolet you have, but a lot of pickups in that year had trouble with the intermediate shaft (Between the column, and the steering gear) It is a type of 'slip joint' that allows movement between the cab, and the frame, it has a nylon insert that wears out over time. The new one has a larger shaft, looks longer lasting. Pretty easy to replace too. - Seems a few full size Chevy vehicles used this shaft. You can actually feel it if you have someone move the steering back and fourth while you put your hand on the shaft.
