Tip & How-To about 2009 Nissan Pathfinder

Nissan Pathfinder TI Diesel engine bay rattle (R51)

Noticed a really gnarly rattle coming from my engine bay when idling and at low engine speeds. faded in and out in a way that would suggest something loose directly coupled to the engine - also sounded light and plasticky.

Traced the issue to the rubber vibration isolating sleeve grommets on the the bolts holding the plastic engine cover down (closest to the front bumper).
They were heavily worn on one side - either designed to have some lateral clamping pressure or just worn weirdly over time.

Couldn't find a replacement part but found a rubber cable grommet with a suitable groove OD at supercheap auto (any auto store should have them). Used a die grinder to open the centre out to match the steel sleeve diameter. Fitted with a bit of silicone lube to ease installation.

Rattle at idle totally gone. Worked great. Should have done it ages ago.

Engine making a clack sound when idling and oil pressure is between 5 to 10 psi.

Sounds like it is time to have some work done or to move on to something newer.

have a 2006 titan; noticed excess condensation and some white smoke after it was warm; also went I accelerate it sounds like a "metal rattle"(?) doesn't make that sound when at an idle...any suggestions? truck has 72000 mls.

The condensation and white smoke could just be excess moisture that can build up in the muffler when the vehicles isn't used for a while or has been doing only short runs (less than 25-30 miles).. Keep an eye on the coolant level, and if it stays good then there isn't much to worry form that. As far as the "metal rattle" on acceleration, this could be what is known as "octane ping". It means that the engine is knocking a bit from fuel that isn't giving it enough octane. Cheap gas and occasional blending errors can cause this. Try running a tankful of mid-grade fuel next time. IF the noise goes away, you've found the culprit. Octane ping doesn't really hurt the engine, but it is annoying. You may be able to still use regular grade fuel, but might have to change the brand to find one that the truck likes better.

car engine idles really high then really low, why?

It can be issue with IAC( idle air control valve) causing the problem.

There are many other possibilities causing these idle issues. Engine idles rough.

There are few help links with solutions to troubleshoot such idle issues.

I suggest you refer the link below and follow its troubleshooting details:------

Noisy engine idle and stutter at low or high speed

I had the same problem (X-type 2.0d 2004). The stutter was cured on mine by getting the ECU fashed with the latest firmware. This is a known problem and the update does cure it (£28), I didn't bother with all the tests the garage wanted to.
The noisey engine at idle is the alternator belt. It resonates at idle and causes the noise, There is a modified bottom pulley, tensioner and belt kit, but it is rather expensive ~£200 plus fitting (around 4 hours labour). Mondeo's have the same problem but that kit doesn't fit the Jag.
Hope this helps
