Tip & How-To about Cars & Trucks

Limp a car home

Most people know these but figured I'd throw it out there for the one or two who don't.

If a fan belt breaks (old school, not serpentine) ***** hose make a great emergency fan belt.

Small holes in the radiator can be temporarily patched with either a raw egg or two, or simply some sawdust
. *** ALWAYS LET ENGINE COOL 20-30 MINUTES BEFORE OPENING RADIATOR CAP! ***

If you are out or low on brake fluid, or power steering fluid and there is none available, automatic transmission fluid can be substituted for either temporarily.

Toothpaste is great for clearing up foggy headlight lenses.

Turtle waxing your windshield will make the water bead up and roll off.

If you get a nail in your tire, DON'T pull it out! It will only make the tire leak faster. Wait until you are ready to repair it then pull it out.

Gorilla tape will sometimes patch a blown water hose temporarily.

Autozone will test any car for free to tell you what the check engine light means. They also test batteries, starters, alternators, etc, and will "loan" you almost any tool you need. You just pay the sales tax and they refund your money when you return the tool.

I need a diagram for a serpentine belt on a 81 f150. it has a 351w .

these don`t have a serpentine belt system. the have a V belt system. if you line up the pulleys then you will know how the belt is to run. if you can`t figure it out try the library for a book that will show the belt routing.

1997 dodge caravan serpentine belt breaks often

make sure that tensioner pulley and idle pulley are not frozen up.take the belt off and spin pulleys if they dont spin this will throw the belt off.if thats not the problem look at any worn edges that would make the belt track off

Hi, I need to change my serpentine belt but my other belts are looking kinda rough, so I think I'm just going to change them all. Looking online I noticed different sizes for the belts for my 1995 Towncar. How do I know which to buy?

Firts of all don't get a belt on line, go to the auto parts store and get one there, They can match up old belts and also look up the correct belt for your car. You need to know what year and size of the motor and what els you have that is belt driven like Ac and power steering and such. If you take your old belts in they can match them with what is in the book to make sure they are right and you don't have to worry about getting the wrong belt.

94 LEXUS GS300, HOW DO RELEASE THE TENSIONER? (FOR THE SERPENTINE BELT) PUTTING A SOCKET ON THE BOLT HEAD ON THE TENSIONER WITH A BREAKER ARM, DOESN'T MOVE IT. DON'T WANT TO FORCE IT AND BREAK THE HEAD OFF.

You shouldn't need to loosen the tensioner itself. To release pressure on the belt tensioner, rotate the belt (or tensioner pulley if the belt is no longer installed) CLOCKWISE. This will release the tension to either remove the old belt or install a new one. Once installed, the belt tensioner will automatically take up the slack.

Serpentine belt gets shredded in the fan every month or so. We have replaced the tensioner pulley twice, and we don't know what the problem is

look at the fan clutch, make sure it is good and your fan is secure. also is the fan clutch coming on when needed? where are you getting your tensioners? try an OEM unit from the dealer.
