Tip & How-To about Cars & Trucks

Checking your alternator

On most cars and trucks, if you have a problem with the battery dying, the way to check if your system is charging, or your battery is bad, First: start the car, then loosen the negative battery terminal, then remove the terminal. If the car dies, then remove your alternator and have it tested at Auto Z or Advance. If the car still runs, remove the battery and have it tested. This works on 99% of cars trucks, and most engine driven vehicles, there are some imports that this will not work on due to engineering by the country that makes the vehicle.

Dash lights are dim and while drivin they go out car sputters and dies oreilley says alternator bad mechanic says it's charging so they charged baterry I drove it one day then same thing it died and then wouldn't start

I suggest O'Reilly's checked more than your mechanic did. Just because he says it is chrging does not mean he checked the diodes, which if bad allow the battery to drain whenever the vehicle is not running. Replace alternator.

99 grand am was driving home battery was about to die so i tried to make it home before it died

Can't say what the thud was..but it certainly sounds like your alternator is not charging your system.. When it isn't charging and the car is running off the battery the car will do some weird things as it loses its.battery power then just die....Auto zone should have found that and not just charge the battery..get yourself a small car charger at autozone $25 -40 or so and charge it again and have them make a full charging system check..good luck..

2003 protege5 wont start unless jumped and dies after about 30 seconds.

Need to check battery condition first. Is it the original battery? If yes chances are it needs to be replaced. May have a dead cell or 2 & will not hold a charge. When it ran before this, was the check battery/charging light on? Also verify charging system is working correctly.
