Do it Yourself: How to clean the battery terminals

Battery of a car is often due to sulphat moisture battery acid. Cleaning is simple and ensures a longer useful life of our battery. Here are some ways to clean your terminals and prevent further sulphate.

Before doing so, the first thing is to disconnect the two wires (start with the negative). If the terminals are stuck, do not try to loosen hammer blows because you risk ruining the battery. If you can not loosen using any tool, spray them with a little a bit of hot water, relaxing immediately.
Then, mix two tablespoons baking soda in a cup of water. The cables inside the glass and leave for about 5 minutes to act.
Remove the cables and rinse with clean water.

When the terminals are properly cleaned, you can lightly sand the terminals with a round brush that comes to this task. Put them in a bit of vaseline, and prevent further sulphate.

Back to connect the cables and screws fits.

Note. If your battery is needed for maintenance, do not forget to add demineralized water, just enough to cover the plates and not fill the hall, and that will harm the battery.

Good luck with this work...

what is the chemical reaction that take place in the lead acid battery?

the sulphuric acid reacts with the lead in the plates with the result that the acid breaks down and tends to go water and the lead becomes lead sulphate
when a battery is dead flat, the plates are all lead sulphate and the density of the acid is approaching that of water
that can be tested with a hydrometer
When a charge is applied to the battery terminals , the process is reversed and the lead sulphate returns as lead and the water ( low ph acid) returns to sulphuric acid

There is steam and a strong egg smell coming from the battery. What is the problem?

This is a high charging on the battery, as it is overcharged . this can be failure of the alternator rectifier or the regulator.
so use a voltmeter and confirm the voltage range to rectify the fault.
A high charging of this nature can damage the battery in the long run.

Car has been sitting 5 months without being started

the battery may be shorted out. do you have a meter to check a batteries condition? if not take the battery into the parts store and they can tell you if it has a dead short in it which means the plates inside the battery have sulphated together and wont allow current to pass through them. lead acid batteries are real bad about this if they go completly dead even if they are newer batteries.

Sulfuric Acid goes in your battery. Could this be what you were after? It is available at any auto parts store

'Grows up' is a funny phrase. The only thing I can think that grows in a car is Lead Sulphate crystals that grow on a battery from mising lead and sulphuric acid

battery/alternator light off and on

Hi there!

It will be the alternator if your battery is under 2 years old.

Batteries lose their capacity after a few years due to a process known as sulphation. White crystaline deposits form, preventing electron flow.

This can actually be reduced and eliminated thesedays by installing a desulphator, or using one in conjunction with a charger. I've recovered 3 batteries so far since I made one, two of which were scrap due to sulphation.

The battery companies don't want you to know about these - that's why batteries only have a 3 year guarantee on them.

If the alternator is faulty, it can be serviced for 1/3 of the price of new.

Hope this provides a solution for you. If so, please take a moment to rate as Fixya! Thanks.
