Engine Overheating due to Radiator Fan Motor

Found out PT Cruiser has a 2 speed fan and when engine runs hot in traffic or at idle or low speed it usally means the high speed on the fan motor has gone bad. I bought a new fan motor with the cowling on ebay that is a generic one and it cost only about a $100 with shipping from a company in Tennesee and it has solved the problem now for over 10 months now.

Replacing the radiator fan and cowling was 2-3 hours work even with some help from another person.

temperature pointer move up and down

Found this to be common. Has a two speed fan. Fan also goes on and off at different speeds. Operates differently with ac on are off. Should not go past the half way mark while idling on hot days and should always drop to normal position while driving. Fluctuation should not be very much Air in system, bleeder on side of fill, not on overflow. Check fan high and low speed.

pt cruiser starts finethen loops at 2200rpm i have changed all sesnsors still no change

Your sensors may be doing exactly what they are meant to do, but it wasn't a bad idea to change them as a starting point. Have you noticed poor cooling from the a/c as well? Open your hood in the driveway and check that your electric radiator fan is turning on regularly once the car warms up. There is a fine dance between the electric radiator fan, the a/c compressor, and the idle sensors on this car. If your problem resolves itself at highway speeds & reoccurs when you stop, then the problem is that your electric radiator fan is in need of replacement. The brushes inside that electric motor do wear out from use - especially in a hot climate - and are not designed to be replaced by a home mechanic. You can have the electric motor rebuilt by a electrical shop - or just replace it yourself with one ordered at any parts counter. When the cooling fan does not switch on at idle speeds, the a/c compressor will overheat and cause it to vent freon to save itself from permanent damage. The overall excess heat buildup in your engine compartment also causes the idle problems where it will surge up and down in slow traffic or at a stoplight. When I changed that motor it solved many inter-related issues that I was having.

i need a wiring diagram for the radiator fan on my 2001 pt cruiser

Check your public library they may even have access to a paid data base. Maybe this will help. With electric fans it's almost always the motor, It's a two speed fan that has three wires. The black is ground, the dark green is the hot for the low speed and the yellow is the hot for the high speed. Run jumpers from the battery to the fan connector. If the fan doesn't run the motor is bad.
