How to change spark plugs on a 5.4 and 4.6

THIS IS FOR ONLY THE SINGLE OVERHEAD CAM .Start by removing the cover over the throttle body (the black plastic cover that says "5.4" on it). There are three 10mm head bolts that hold it on. Next remove the air intake tube from the throttle body to the air filter housing. You loosen the hose clamps at either end of it, disconnect the connector on the AT (about half way up the air intake hose), the pull out the small hoses that go into the air intake tube near the throttle body. Next remove the brace from the power steering reservoir to thermostat housing. There are three 8mm or 5/16" head screws that hold it on. Now you should be able to see the COPs.
To remove the COPs you can use a 7mm or 9/32" wrench or nut driver or socket, extension and ratchet or all of the above. If you turn the fuel injectors to the side it will give you more room to work with the COPs. Unplug the connector on each COP by pressing the tab in and pulling on the connector. After you're done that just twist and pull the COPs out. A couple of the COPs on the driver's side and #4 on the passenger's side are a bit hard to get at but with some patience they will come out.
After you've removed the COPs take a blow gun and blow out the spark plug holes. Don't be surprised if there is rust and junk in them. Next you can actually remove the plugs. Use a combination of extensions, swivels (universal joints), sockets and ratchets to get at them. Whatever works best for you is good.
On the harder ones to get at I usually use a socket with a 4" extension, then a swivel, then a long extension, then the ratchet. The plugs are way down in the holes which is why I use the extension then the swivel. The swivel makes it easier to clear the firewall.
Set the gap on the new plugs to whatever it says on your emissions decal on the radiator support....usually .052-.056". Apply a small amount of anti-seize to the threads only on the spark plug. You can use a piece of vacuum hose or fuel hose over the end of the plug to get it started in the hole. Carefully start the plugs in their holes. If you can't get them most of the way in by hand with the hose take a look and see why not. Cross threaded plug threads are no fun! The plugs are to be tightened to 13 lb-ft. which is just hand tight with a short ratchet. Don't over tighten them! The threads in the aluminum heads have enough problems as it is. After that just put everything back together in reverse order. Apply some dielectric grease to the plug boots as well to help seal them.
I've done enough of these that I can replace the plugs in approximately 45 minutes but don't be surprised if the first time you do it takes a few hours.

A strong possibility of a defective Throttle Positioning Sensor (TPS)...It can be tested with a volt meter...TPS is located on the throttle body (see diagram below) & has a three pin connector with following wire colors; Brown (ground)...Yellow (+5 volts)...And White (TPS output)...Set meter to 5 volt dc...Push point,of safety pins into the Yellow and Brown wire at rear of connector...Do not disconnect connector...connect + lead to Yellow pin and - lead to Brown pin...Turn key on...Meter must read at least .08 volts...Open throttle full...Meter must read at least 4 volts...If not TPS is defective...Send results...NOTE>>>Diagram is based on a 2.0L Single Overhead Cam Engine, if your vehicle is different let me know...saailer

gentlepersons... have 1992SL1 engine died... gong to replace it ,,, but all involved want to know engine type dual cam? vs ? ... can you tell me how to determine whats in the car now.. vin# nails it down to 1992...but thats all I can discover


That is pretty easy. If your Saturn is an SL1 it is single cam if it is an SL2 it is dual cam. That is the only difference between an SL1 and an SL2 - Saturn didn't even bother to put a tag or emblem anywhere on the body to differentiate between the the two models. The 8th digit in the VIN will confirm this for you. If the 8th digit is "7" it is a Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) engine. If the 8th digit is a "9" then it is a Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) engine. When you have seen both engines, it is pretty obvious by simply looking at them. The DOHC cam cover is much wider and has 2 "humps" with spark plugs and wires going down the center between the humps. The SOHC cam cover is narrow and the plugs and wires go down one side.

Also in the 1992 model year, the DOHC engine was equipped with Multiport Fuel Injection. (MFI) The fuel injectors (4 of them) were located in the top of the intake manifold. The SOHC engine had Throttle Body Injection (TBI) The two injectors were located in the throttle body.

I don't have any pictures of the cam covers, but I have pictures of the cam cover gaskets (AKA Valve Cover Gaskets) you can very easilly see the difference.

LOOK UNDER HOOD TO THE RIGHT ON DRIVER SIDE.YOU SEEN A BLACK PLASTIC BOX WITH A AIRDUCT WITH LARGE CLAMPS AROUND AIRDUCT GOING TO MASS AIR FLOW TO THROTTLE BODY.THE AIR FILTER IS INSIDE THE BLACK PLASTIC BOX.TO REMOVE AIR FILTER.FIRST YOU DISCONNECT MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR..LOOSEN THE HOSE CLAMPS THAT SECURES THE AIR INTAKE DUCT TO THE THROTTLE BODY THEN LOOSEN REMOVE THE FASTNERS ON AIR FILTER COVER THEN LIFT REMOVE COVER AND REPLACE AIR FILTER THEN PUT EVERYTHING BACK VISA VERSA.

changing spark plugs 2001 Kia sportage


These are really quite easy to do just time consuming. 1. remove the air ducting from the air box and throttle body 2. remove the accelerator cable and kickdown cable(if equiped with auto trans) from the throttle body 3. remove the 4 bolts from the throttle body and be careful to not ruin the gasket upon removal 4. remove the black cover from the rocker cover(valve cover) 5. remove the 2 coli packs and the spark plug wires. 6. remove the 4 spark plugs. Use NGK or Nippon Denso plugs and gapped at .032". Let me know if you need anything else.

how do i replace the rear spark plugsn a 2002 ford


On the dual overhead cam 3.0 liter you must remove the upper intake plenum to access the right bank spark plugs and wires.
On the single cam 3.0 liter I have seen guys remove the wiper cowel to gain access, but I just reach around the drivers side behind the throttle body.
