2001 Toyota Celica Questions & Answers
2001 Toyota Celica keeps over heating and I can't work out why
For many of the 90's and 2000's Toyota various models - Camry, Tacoma, 4 Runners, Corolla, and some other models overheating is usually caused by temperature sensitive fan switch on the radiator not operating. Electric fan on the radiator should operate when temp above 200 degrees. Less often the control relay 90987-03003 is defective. Check if bubbling in the radiator smells like exhaust. That would indicate a blown head gasket. A jumper wire from your marker light positive to the lower contact in the fan control relay socket will operate your fan when parking lights are on. The larger vehicles with more powerful radiator fans will need a hefty jumper from a headlight positive to avoid overheating the lighting wiring. Make sure the engine is off and warmed up to check the radiator core with your hand to see if it is getting circulation. If it is all cold the thermostat might be stuck.

The computer sets this code when the camshaft position sensor feedback indicates the camshaft timing is not responding properly to the control signals being sent to the oil valve that changes the camshaft timing. You can try an oil change first, if the oil is dirty. If the engine has not had regular oil changes, odds are it will have to be taken apart and desludged. If maintenance has been good, the problem may be with the oil control valve, the VVT actuator on the end of the camshaft, or the wiring of either the oil valve or camshaft position sensor.
Fumes coming through the air vent
did you have the manifold checked as it can crack, when at full temp ie say moving along at 40 50 the manifold will open the crack and exhaust gas will come out of the area, it can also be the gasket is warn out from expansion and contraction , when engine hot it will expand the and when it cools down it contracts, as does in any metal system. the manifold is the first area to goes if you have the smell of exhaust gas in the cab. as its higher and hotter than the cat
Why is heater not working?
Check heater tap is on or it could be the baffle inside the heater core, remove one heater hose to make sure water is flowing.
Heater blowing cold air
Can you do a quick test for me? Turn the car on - but start out with your settings on A/C - but the fan not on/nor a/c button if you have it. If you can turn just the fan on - let me know the condition of the air. Now, once the car's running - move it over to A/C and turn the fan up high. - Now, if it's pushing cold air - move your temp dial to warm where the air should get hot - if absolutely nothing changes when you move that dial to warm - you might get lucky, pull out the control module from the dash - and take a look at the linkages and cables connected. A lot of metal wires, etc. some even have vacuum lines that operate a 'flap door' that opens and closes when you turn that dial. Basically - your dial's connection may have come undone or broke - so the car's not getting the message to open or close that flap so that the hot air can come into the vehicle. If no success there - shoot me your year, make & model and I'll see if I can get you some tech info to troubleshoot. All the best and good luck.
