1998 Jeep Cherokee 4WD Questions & Answers
My 1998 Cherokee with 4.0 will run but cannot get cam/ crank sync.
The code suggests a timing issue, your timing belt could be stretched, or jumped, it's a bit involved to check it out, but there is a line on each timing gear to help you get them lined up again. If there is excessive belt slop, your valves will be opening a bit too late and possibly closing too long, and your spark timing would be retarded. It would be worthwhile to check your coil as well, you should have a beautiful blue spark coming out of it, if it's yellow, replace it.

My 1998 Jeep Cherokee jerks while driving. Tried everything
wow that's a very dramatic thing to have happened to you !! now I cant be specific on the problem , but heres what I suggest , find someone that has a code reader that gives live data views , this can tell you 4 sure if the cam/crank sensor is loosing its signal or instead (what I believe is happing ) maybe the signal is merely out of range , now out of range signals on crank sensors can occur from misaligned sensors , there are a few possible ways this occurs , one its never properly aligned in the first place , second its not got a solid target to see , this can occur if the bearings and slack tensioners are failing on worn out engines , again a live data feed while driving I believe will be the tell all

Repair of A/C and heater fan not working
1998 JK jeep , ive posted these tests and the free FSM book here, 100s of time.s
search much?
its the heater blower. failing.
DOES IT BLOW ON HIGH?????????? this is #1 important.
and like all such blowers, it can fail for all these ways.
even a loose wire.
1: fuse blown, (always first, for the end of time)
2: controls bad.
3: blower bad.
4: wire to any of the above, bad. (not conducting or shorted)
all cars,. some newer cars a computer runs this but is #2
the book is free.
98jx
click (spoon fed) JK 96+
click wiring
click 8w2-1 index. then see heater. blower.
blower is page 8w42 in the real fsm
what does it show.?
JB25 fuse not blown? (answring for fan dead no high)
Relay works>? tests, like all relays we test. sop
gas engine?
Fuse PDC6 not blown if diesel PDC 11
on HIGH the lever blower , on high grounds the motor blower
if the relay has power to blower 12v pin A ,dark green
then the blower motor is bad.
it only takes a $10 walfart meter to find cause.
12vdc across the blower pins on high is goal.
here is the free book, and is REAL not some PoS clone RAG.

How do you repack front wheel bearings on a 98 Cherokee 4X4
OP<
Posted by J Sparacino on Aug 31, 2016
you double posted. why do that????
no, the hubs are integrated bearing hubs.
here read the parts pages,
see any tapered bearings there,
if not sold , pray tell , how can you pack the bearing not in hand.
not only that, there are like 1000000 books on how to pack front bearing, if they were removable and are not.
why not look first then post.? at car and the book, !
or read the FREE FSM, it says what ?, unbolt them
and replace the integrated hub assembly.
that is a fact. 300 times ive posted the free book, now.
and is still there, and the words still real ,still jeep words and all accurate. sigh.
below is rockautos list of after market hub assemblies.
do not get confused at those needle bearings, those are actually front axle shaft bearings, not hub wheel bearings. fact.
wheel bearing are ball or tapered rollers, to handle lateral huge loading.

How to remove the heater core from a 1998 Jeep
If it is necessary to remove the heater assembly, the cooling system must be drained before removing the heater core.
When a heater core leaks, a new heater core is installed or the old one repaired.
Heater Housing
- The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core.
- Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It threfore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.
The heater housing is disassembled to get to the heater core.
Heater Core
- Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain acess to the heater core.
- Remove the heater coolant hoses.
- Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped).
- Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps.
- Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing.
- To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps.
When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.

I have a jeep cherokee sport 98 6cly has no spark turns over but no spark changed coil, cap rotor crankshaft pos sensor
check fuses yet?
use any scan tool (USA comments)
it tells you 1/2 the time (low voltage side)
why there is no spark
crank for 5 seconds, release key, (not off) see DTCs NOW.
all cars. do this (EFI this check)
4.0L engine.
the PCM makes spark
it uses the CMP/CKP sensor as input, the PCM then creates spark by activation of the Ignitior device that charges the IGNITIION COIL.
did you check for spark at the COIL directly?>?>>>>>>
The PCM will report the bad CKP/CMP
are you using a scan tool (as low as $9 bucks), or working blind.?
also is the ASD relay working right.
the ASD relay is first. after the coil output lug is dead. (found)
is the ASD dropping out after 2 seconds of cranking, BINGO.
when you see it DROP out that is your cue to use a SCAN tool
the tool will tell you why it DROPPED.
as will the immo lamp. in dash...... if you have it.
see ASD here.
http://www.fixkick.com/Jeeps/jeeps.html
if the ASD never closes, there will NEVER BE spark , ever.
see why?
the ASD is odd,
It takes spark to keep spark.!
you are allowed to have spark (blind) for 2 seconds only.

Battery is drain
drained, past tense?
if you didnt use a voltmeter how would you even know its drained.
or was that just a guess?
the battery is charged if the voltage (rested) is 12.6vdc.
if not charge it.
if it keeps discharging, parked, that is called a phantom drain.
if it only discharges driving ,that is a bad charge SYSTem in car.
are the battery cable lugs clean (a standard service point)?
