1984 volkswagen crank no start getting fuel and spark

You must have the plug leads in the wrong place on the distributor.
Firing order is 1-3-4-2
Remove the distributor cap. There is a tiny mark on the aluminum body where the cap sits on it. Turn the motor clockwise by hand until the rotor lines up with this mark. #1 plug lead should be in the distributor cap hole closest to the rotor in a clockwise direction.
If the motor still does not start rotate all the plug leads 180 Deg.

I need to replace the ignition switch

To remove the key barrel.
You have to drill a hole in the metal housing, at about the 4 o'clock position 10 to 12 mm from the edge of the housing.
With the key then inserted in the barrel push a pin into the hole and the barrel will come out.
Caution the housing is very thin and it does not take much to drill through it.

How two set timeing?

Align the mark on the crank sprocket with the edge of the intermediate pulley, and the cam sprocket mark with the top right edge of the valve cover. Be aware that as you tension the belt that the cam sprocket will move a few degrees, so allow for this when setting them up! It's tricky so be sure they are aligned properly by rotating the engine through 2 complete revolutions by hand and recheck the alignment. More than 1 sprocket tooth off and engine will run poorly and have little power... Hope this helps...;-)

Fuel pump

Check the relays in the fuyse box. Put your hand on them, cycle the ignition key, and make sure that they click, one by one, with the cyling of the key. Pull the fuse for the pump, see if it still runs, key on. if that is so, then your circuit is getting power from someplace after the fuse box.

Is the gas being injected into the cylinders though! Try spraying easy start or the like into the intake, and see if it starts briefly.

NO FUEL GOING TO ENGINE, BUT ENGINE WANTS TO TURN OVER

Hi

Have you flushed out all of the old unleaded fuel from the system and fitted a new fuel filter? Unleaded fuel only lasts for a very short while before going off. You need to flush out the tank and the fuel lines and then put fresh fuel in the tank and fit a new fuel filter or you could be leading yourself on a wild goose chase.

Do you hear the fuel pump running for a second or two when you switch on the ignition? If not then you need to check the fuel pump positive terminal for battery voltage with a volt meter whilst someone switches on the ignition for you, and check the fuel pump negative terminal to ensure it is properly earthed.

If you have a live and an earth at the pump but the pump still isn't running then you need to renew the fuel pump.

If these suggestions don't solve your problem then I'll need to know what size engine is in the car before I advise you further.

Regards

Geordie

Wrench symbol on 2007 vw rabbit

It is your service interval indicator - basically meaning oil change coming up. Check owners manual to see how to display days and miles until it is required (cant remember that exactly, think you just hold the odo button while turning on ignition). To reset, hold the odometer button and turn on the ignition, then push the clock minute button and this should reset the indicator.
