Car wont start

My routine to check non-starting motors: (petrol/gas models)
  • Check immobilizer status
  • Check fuel supply -does it reach the fuel rail when starting. If not OK, check 12v supply to fuel pump when starting. If OK, fuel pump maybe dead.If not present, check fuel pump fuse and relay.
  • If fuel supply is OK, check spark ignition. If not OK, follow the supply circuit backwards to the ECM. Coils and/or ignition amplifier connector should have one 12v supply to it when ignition switch is on.
For Diesels with 'common rails' you can take same approach for fuel. No ignition testing possible. The diesel fuel pump still needs battery power. It will make some sound when IGN is on. If not, check ALL fuses and relays.

Why doesn't my 1998 olds intrigue start?

That is the same as saying on the phone I am sick what is wrong with me? What are the symptoms? You need to provide detailed information as to what is happening when you try to start it! Do you have the key, gas in the car, charged battery, does the engine turn over, etc.?

Why does my car make a clicking sound when trying to turn over?

the cause of no starts , in this case no cranks. is best solved by testing, not guessing. my 1st guess, is the car is A/T Oldsmoblies, don't have optional, stick shifts. so A/T it is. that brings in the PRNDL switch on the side of the transmission. only autos have that part. when i see the starter only click , and it fails to JUMPER cable starting? does it>? I hot wire the starter, 1st. i do that 1st test to be sure the starter really works , say , bingo it does. crank now.? does it? if this happens, that means the KEY line is dead.! 100% fact. so i check the voltage at the PRNDL (input and output) and i gbet 0v not 12v, on the output of PRNDL, that means it's bad. but wait? but if the input to the PRNDL is dead that means the key switch is dead. hummmm, 2 tests, here, and answsers. all with a $10 walfart volt meter, any meter made, in 100 years. tricks: did you wiggle both swtiches , while cranking? did you try to start car in neutral , which uses fresh virgin contacts in the PRNDL.>? here is a page that shows, each step. the 5 ways and all tests here, and works on all cars. made. http://www.fixkick.com/nocrank.html see the tricks here. http://www.fixkick.com/nocrank.html#tricks Hack jobs, happen: the key line on some cars , have been hacked, for aftermarket alarms.? or remote start bs.? for other odd reasons, so when looking at the Key line wires, look of hack jobs. (damage, non stock mods) recap. (always first) (jumper cables tests failed)
  1. Can you turn the engine over by hand?
  2. Can the starter be hot wired. (it wont start , just cranks)?
if yes, and yes, , then the key line is bad. i bet i just cut the problem in half, cheers ! do ask questions... have answers.

How to release fuel pressure without gauge

Locate the inertial safety switch (usually in the trunk, check your Owner's Manual) and disconnect the electrical plug connector from it. Once you have disconnected the plug from the inertial safety switch, attempt to start the car. It may run momentarily, then will stall out and not restart. When this happens, pressure has been released from your fuel system. After you are done with whatever you are doing and want to re-pressurize the system, replace the plug in the inertial safety switch, turn the key switch to ON (not START), count to five, then return the switch to OFF, count five, then do the same thing again two more times. After you have cycled the ignition switch three times, the car should start with no problem

No oil is getting to oil filter with car started

  1. This is most important, don't turn the engine on in your car, and don't drive it anywhere. You don't want a ruined engine.
  2. Second, have you checked the oil level? When was the last time you had the oil changed? Did you change it or did you have a mechanic change it? It may be that either enough oil was not added (and that should have been 4.5 quarts) or that the the washer to the oil plug has been crushed in some way, and was re-used. Oil will leak out if that is the cause. Some people say that a new washer for that plug should be replaced every time the oil is changed.
  3. When the oil filter was replaced, did the old "O" ring stick to the engine? If so, the oil will leak out badly. If you don't know how to find the "O" ring, go to: http://www.carcarekiosk.com/video/1998_Oldsmobile_Intrigue_GL_3.8L_V6/oil/change_oil_and_oil_filter and watch the video.
My guess is that either the oil level is very low, or it has drained out completely. If this is the case, leave your car where it is (hopefully at home - if not its cheaper to have it towed home than replace the engine), get the things you need, then come back and fix it yourself. It's easy, just stay extremely safe when you're under your car: use goggles or safety glasses, gloves, make sure your wheels are blocked off the ground safely, and follow the directions on the link I posted above. The wonderful part of fixing your own car is that you become "part of it" and it's easier and easier every time you look at it or work on it. The more you do small things on it, the more confident you become. Just remember, you're not re-designing your car, you're just looking at it like a Lego kit. The pieces are already made, and you're just putting them together. I really believe oil has leaked out. If you want to, you could put a piece of cardboard under the oil pan and pull it out tomorrow to see if you find an oil leak. DON'T DRIVE IT THOUGH .... it's much more expensive to make a major repair on a car than follow check-it-out directions. If you need more directions than this, just let fixya know, and I'll return. Best wishes on your successes! You can do it! Oil Filter Change Oldsmobile Intrigue 1998 2002 1998 Oldsmobile...

Wipers will not return to rest position

Oldsmobile Intrigues are known for this problem. The good thing is that it probably won't cost you any money to fix it. It was probably caused by asking your windshield wipers to wipe off snow or ice from your windshield. The design of this wiper motor isn't strong enough to do that, though. All you will need to fix it is the link below, and pliers, and Phillips screw driver and a straight-blade screwdriver (a big one for leverage). Once you get it fixed, it will remind you to clear your windshield by hand first next time, and if you don't, the fix you're going to make will probably work next time too. You're going to just bend a small tab back to its correct position, and a cam is involved, so you'll need pictures to help you get there. The link I suggest is shown at the bottom of this description. You can print the directions out, then take them to your car to do it step-by-step. The link says the instructions are for a 2002 Intrigue, but mine is a 1998 and the directions worked perfectly. Suggestion: If you "blow it" and bend the tab too many times so it breaks off, it's cheaper to buy a new windshield wiper motor online, and then use these directions to replace it. A repair shop charged me $700 to "fix" my wiper motor the first time, but ended up replacing it because the mechanics had no idea what to do with it. Because it was snowing and turning to ice, and I had only one car, I took it in. Now I won't ever have to do that again. Read and look at the directions 6 times, then use the directions! It's really simple. Best wishes in advance on a job well done! (Think of all the fun you're going to have making money fixing this for others having Intrigues!)
