It sounds as though your connection is not grounded. The starter take a lot of juice from the battery and your connection has to be solid. Check and make sure it is free of debris and make certain that all connections are secure. There should be no wiggling in wires. Make sure also. That you don’t have a starter ”fuse”. U definitely do have a thermal issue with the traits you have described. The diagnosis you got is spot on. But shop around for the part since most places will not allow the return of electronic parts.
Not sure what the 120 amp fusible link socket should look like.
If anyone can figure it out (besides the dealer) it will be AutoZone. I carry any problem that I can't figure out to them and they will keep on until they figure it out. If they can't then you will have to take it to a dealer, which I know ou don't want to.
