First of all, it would be helpful to define what you mean by excessive. How much oil is it using? Do you still have most or all of your power? Is it smoking? Is there oil on the ground under the car after you park for a while?
High mileage engines often have leaky gaskets (oil on the ground), but they also tend to burn oil. Valve guides wear out, and oil leaks into the firing chamber because of that. Usually, when this happens, you will have a problem with fouling spark plugs and lack of power. The piston rings also wear out, letting oil get by and into the firing chamber. Excessive crankcase pressure due to "blow-by," where combustion pressure is released by worn out rings into the crankcase, which pushes oil into the air intake. This doesn't foul the spark plugs as severely, but also causes smoke out the exhaust.
Finally, if the engine has not been serviced for a long time, there are many things that can cause or allow oil to go where it shouldn't, usually into the combustion chamber and out the exhaust.
There is an excellent product available from Rislone that can help in some cases, and with amazing results. However, if your engine is worn out, it may need to be rebuilt or replaced.

just about everyone does with either an old car or a new car with high mileage.how excessive? is oil consumption.well first thing is to check for oil leaks either underneath the motor or any oil lines feed into the motor .any major leaks would be pretty noticeable.if none are present then one would assume that your motor is burning the oil through the exhaust system .check to see what color smoke is coming threw the tail pipe.blue or black smoke indicates oil burning white will indicate engine coolant burning.in any case some color smoke is normal just depends on how much.so lets say your exhaust smoke is normal still could be burning oil just not a noticeable amount.on average you shouldnt have to add anymore than 2 quarts a month or every 1000 miles .depending on your driving conditions if you are having to add more than this there would be a leak some where or heavy color smoke.keep up on oil changes and always add lucas oil usually 1 quart its alot thicker than conventional oil so it reduces engine wear and will handle any small leaks in the engine components like the pistons and rings.if problem still present get to a dealer or certified mechanic as soon as possible good luck.

Mice and rats much prefer to stay out of sight.
If you leave the bonnet up when car is parked the rodents won't feel secure and will find somewhere else to hang out.

There is no user adjustable idle speed control. It is set by the car's computer through the idle air control valve (IAC). If idle is wrong, check this valve for proper function.

My suspicion is a faulty relay, but it's just a hunch because of how it's behaving. I assume that once it's running if you put a fuse in it doesn't blow?
Find the relay for the aircon as that's the most likely candidate and remove it, see if it still happens. If it does not cure it you will have to try to isolate each circuit supplied by that fuse one at a time.
Whatever is causing the surge is only happening when the circuit is energised or de-energised by the ignition, but presumably everything is working OK?

Some lights come on ayer so many miles, while others come on because the car is keeping record of a misfire or some other issue that you probably couldn't hear or feel even if you knew when it was coming! If it's the latter then it will stay on for several starts and then clear if it doesn't happen again. I'd is the first then it may be time for scheduled maintenance (oil change, 15000 mile service, and so on). Hope it helps
