Question about Polaris ATV

The starter will not engage , the problem seems to be in the safety switch that is connected to the brake pedal. I have to press to brake several times in different positions to get it to turn over. where is this switch located. It is a 2006, 500, 4x4 Ranger

My problem is on a Polaris Ranger UTV, not a Ford Ranger. My model is a 2006 Polaris Ranger 500, 4x4.Thanks

  • jamie4123 Mar 19, 2011

There is a safety feature on the polaris ranger that will not let the starter turn over if the brake pedal (not emergency brake) is not pressed down. The ranger is designed to start in gear and is this a safety feature because of that. I have done some checking and it appears that the problem is in this safety switch circuit. Where is this switch located.

There is some kind of safety on my ranger because the engine will not turn over unless the brake pedal (not emergency brake) is depressed. I purchased it new

You have a Park Brake sensor switch, but I don't believe there is a brake pedal safety switch. It sounds like your Starter Solenoid may be getting hung up, or your Starter is getting stuck. It is also possible that your Ignition Switch is worn out.
Test the switches with a multi-meter. If you find any to be bad, replacement parts can be found here:

The Park Brake sensor switch is number 17:

If you have a brake pedal safety switch, which I don't think you do, it will be in about the same spot as the switch in the diagram I sent you previously. I am showing no safety switches out of all of the parts available for your Polaris Ranger for your brake pedal. The Park Brake switch is the only switch that may act as a safety switch. Test this switch with a multi-meter to see if it closes the circuit when the pedal is depressed.

The part you are referring to is the neutral safety switch or as Ford calls it the transmission range sensor. This is farily easy to replace and it is on the side of the transmission. It is held on by two 8mm bolts. Just put your transmission in N and take the switch off. Line up the N on the new switch and install it and bolt it up. Now you're done! I'm posting a pic of the part to further assist you.

On the transmission (driver side I believe) there will be a sensor mounted on the side with a cable running to it. This is called the Transmission Range Sensor or also the Neutral Safety Switch. It is possible that this has failed or the transmission shift cable that connects to it is stretched or damaged.

Hope helps.

I have a 2005 predator and the problem is that it has no power I Just put a new battery and still have no power what could I do

You need to check your starter relay, safety switch and there may be a few other components right there - your electrical schematic is included - I believe it's for the 50 but they should be nearly identical if not exact. If you just tried a new battery - I would check every wire, connection, ground, and then check the starter relay and safety switch. Any of those components are shot and it'll never start. Behind starter fly wheel only moves back not forward wil not start not start starter seems like its working spins

Disconnect the battery and then carefully remove the starter. Take the unit to a local auto parts dealer for a bench test. Starters have two separate functions, one spins the shaft to crank the engine, the other is called a bendix, which pushes the starter gear out to engage the flywheel, and then after the engine engages, retracts it (except in the case of starter/generator combo units which recharge your battery and power your vehicle's electricals while the engine is running) Always best to get a bench test rather than depending on apparent symptoms.

Why do I Sometimes have to use pull start now?

you'll have to break out a meter and start checking things. could be a starter switch, starter relay or just needed a starter rebuild. also if your bike has safety switches like brake handles, clutch and nuetral switches check all them.

Got a 125cc Taotao atv for the kids.put new battery in new chain ,fuses all good checked all wires .no probs .cant figure why it wont even try and to start.no sound or cranking .as it is electric star

Your starter is probably out, or not properly connected. Locate the starter and there should be two wires going to it, they both should be marked with + and - make sure red goes to positive and black to -
If you want to test your starter before buying a new one, take it off of the fourwheeler, and hook it up to the battery. (note: this is not recommended by the manufacturer may void warranty. If you do do it.... Hold on to that starter.)

What to do when fourwheeler wonts start

  1. check the battery
  2. Make sure kill switch is not engaged
  3. Check gas level
  4. Does the ATV have a safety tether? If so reseat it.
  5. Make sure gas is on, some atvs have switch.
  6. Also check to make sure you are not running on reserve tank.
These are some basics, others are spark plug, starter and carb.
