Trying to find timming marks on polaris 500 sportsman 1999 found some on line but intake valve hits piston i lined up the mark on tdc on the crank and put the two dots parallel with valve cover can ne one help plaese

SOURCE: how do you line up timing chain,gear,and flywheel

try putting both cams down one tooth. i took mine apart and and drew a picture of the cam locations and they did not line up with the manuals picture. so i thought that my pic was wrong so i changed it to what the manual said, and it did what you said just back fired. so thats when i took it back apart to put the cam gears down one tooth so they looked like my picture that i drew. then i put it back togther and she ran great. you just want the left one just below and the righht just above if you see both bottom dots its not right.

SOURCE: 2005 Polaris 700 sportsman 4x4 gets warm, looses power?

My Sportsman runs bad when heated up, but if you add fuel it runs fine again. I had a pick up that had an internal fuel pump like our Sportsman's and it did the exact same thing. It turned out being the fuel pump was worn out due to a plugged fuel filter. Forcing the pump to fail prematurely. I found I had bad fuel in my Sportsman and am going to replace the filter and the fuel pump. I also checked my plugs, MAF sensor, and Air filter, they were fine.

you probly need a new heat sensor, its located on the bottom right of your rad, i had the same problem with my 700 the fan only worked when it was already over heating, i cut the wires flush at the sensor drilled a hole above the key switch and mounted a toggle switch, no more over heating,

Hi Ryan , the timing gear marks will possible not mark hundred percent when timing chain is worn much . the tensioner should be inside when you check the valve timing .

05 700 King quad with timing marks all lined up should all 4 valves open at almost the same time intake and exhaust open on exhaust stroke????


the exhaust and inlet valves will be moving if you rock the crank back and forward at TDC
this is called valve overlap and indicates that you are timing the valves on the exhaust stoke tdc and not the compression stroke tdc
turn the crank over till you get tdc again and see if the inlet and exhaust valves have clearance and the timing marks line up
timing is done only on no 1 piston TDC position compression stroke

I need more technical info.

Did you line up ALL the timing/valve/cam/piston location marks when you assembled the engine?? A new head..?? - new valves, cam. ..?? Piston installed in the correct direction, Does the carb float bowl have gas in it..? (the drain screw is in the very bottom- loosen it and gas should flow out freely. What do you mean by "kick over".. does it have a kick starter? ..or will the motor not turn over with the kick starter? Please tell me more. Thanks

Our Polaris Sportsman 500 battery died. We tried to pull start it and it jerked and pulled out of my hands. Now we can't pull it at all. Seems stuck at a high compression. Any help?


maybe the battery is ok but the problem is a lock in the engine --hydraulic lock, crank seizure ,bent conrod

Engine wont start on my polaris big boss 500 6x6 after the piston and rings was replaced


First - Did you find ALL the pieces of the broken piston...if not...STOP and FIND them.. they are in the bottom of the crankcase...you engine WILL NOT live long if you have not gotten ALL the pieces--even the TINIEST ones out!! You mat have more damage than just a broken piston.. something caused it to break.. you may have cracked the crankcases...may have damaged the main bearing(YES) and/or damaged the crank bearing.. see if gas in leaking into the transmission oil.
There is an arrow on the piston that faces toward the EXHAUST port. If there are hole(s) in the piston, they go towards the INTAKE.
Do some more searching and repost the results for review!
