Question about RTO 125cc Full Size Adult Quad ATV

1 Answer

Bombardier quest 500 (2003)- starts and idles great, can ease up to 15mph ok, but any fast acceleration, and it bogs down, sputters and backfires. Have had carb done, fuel pump changed and new cdi box put on. Ran ok for about 30 miles and went back to same issues! Any solutions? Rick

Starts, idles and runs great up 3/4 throttle. Why does it bog down after that?

Check for vacuum leaks. Spay starter fluid around intake, carb base, etc., while engine is idling, listen for change in engine idle.

Why does my ATV bog down and die when I keep the throttle wide open?

If you are lucky, you might just need new fuel filter and the fuel bowl cleaned out, and maybe new air filter. If not so lucky you need carburetor rebuilt. Backfire is usaully caused by engine running too lean ( too much air for the amount of fuel present). Fuel bowls get gunk in them and the fuel needles and fuel jets get varnished up. The accelerator pump gets worn out gaskets and/or bellows and doesn't give the right amount of fuel mist when you accelerate.

Full Choke is indicative of a motor starved for fuel

Have 1999 arctic cat 400 idles fine but accelerate it sputters and backfires. already cleaned carb

Hi Raymond,
This sounds an awful lot like a safety switch issue. A lot of ATV's now have safety switches which need to be deactivated otherwise the safety switch sends a signal to the ECU telling it to impede or delay the timing. So on your model I believe you have to pull the clutch in before you attempt to start it. AND you have an emergency brake safety switch. The emergency break safety switch can be activated if the emergency brake lever has been removed or if the pivot point is heavily worn, or if the rigging is wrong. All of these things will cause the lever to contact the switch improperly. And so your ATV thinks the emergency break is on. Basically your ATV thinks you're crazy for trying to accelerate while the break is on so it impedes or delays the timing so you wont hurt the ATV or yourself. And that's why your getting a nice idle but backfiring and sputtering when you try to accelerate.
Hope this helps. Good Luck
