MY 04 POLARIS PREDATOR 500 TROY LEE EDITION WILL ANLY START WITH THE INTAKE SNORKEL OFF.BUT I CANT REV IT UP .IT JUST GETS ALITTLE FASTER THAN AN IDLE WITH THE THROTTLE WIDE OPEN BUT DOESNT DIE. THEN IF I PUT THE SNORKEL ABOUT AN INCH AWAY FROM THE INLET WHILE THE THROTTLE IS WIDE OPEN AND HOLD JUST RIGHT .IT REVS UP LIKE ITS SUPPOSED TO WITH THE THROTTLE WHEN IM THUMBING IT.ANY CLOSER THAN AN INCH IT DIES.

I have seen this many times before. First is to check the battery sounds dumb i know but just make sure its good. If it is good. try this, there is an electronic throttle safety located in the thumb throttle, using a small screwdriver pop the cap off the thumb throttle, you will see to contacts that are probably touching each other, adjust the throttle cable to open that gap to approx 1/16 inch. If that doesnt help the only other cause for this in my years of re-building these is that you either have a cracked crank seal or the upper valves are to loose or to tight. I see these have alot of problems with idling and usually if it is the crank seal we just rebuild the whole thing. But if its the valves we rebuild the upper assembly and rebuild the carbs. Also check the compression of the motor to see if it is at the factory 85-90 psi if the compression is low check the valve lash to ensure its set to factory as this can cause low compression if the valve lash is set correctly then unit may need a rebuild. Let me know what happens when you check the things i have listed above and we can go from there. As i have been rebuilding these polaris predators for almost 10 years now. thanks midwest tek

Whats the exact motor you have. An i cant tell you exactly how i dont think anyone on here can cause you need a timing gauge and to set your timing points then to make the adjustments from there. As you have to figure out what the the timing is at. Then make adjustments from there. I will look in the service guide and figure out the steps.

Ok so this is how you adjust the timing please make sure you do it correct or you will damage the motor at your own hands.

    1. Remove ignition timing inspection plug from recoil
housing. To position crankshaft at Top Dead Center
    (TDC) on the compression stroke.

    2. Rotate engine slowly in the direction of rotation
watching intake Valves open and start to close.
    3. Continue to rotate engine slowly, watching for the
cam shaft sprocket marks and the "T" mark in the
    timing inspection hole.
    4. Align the "T" (TDC) mark on flywheel with the
indent in the inspection hole and the cam
sprockets marks (facing upward) aligned with the
    dots at the 12 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions.
    NOTE:
The cam lobes should be laying flat and
the valves have clearance at thispoint.

Place the thrust washer on to the crankshaft with
the chamfered side in ward. Install the crankshaft
cam sprocket onto the shaft. Note the double
spline for ease of installation. The alignment mark
    should face outward.
Position the chain for correct timing by aligning the bottom cam timing
mark with the brass colored bottom chain link.
Keep tension on the chain so as to not lose chain
alignment at the crankshaft sprocket during cam
    installation.
    5. Next, install the intake cam, positioning the upper
cam chain for correct timing by aligning the
remaining brass colored chain link with the 12
    o'clockdotonthecamsprocket. Timing is in phase
when all three brass colored cam chain links align
with all three sprocket timing marks and the
secondary cam gear marks are at approximately
the 9 o'clock position, with the exhaust cam timing
    mark slightly advanced.

NOTE: Failure to align marks in this fashion will
cause valve---to---piston interference, resulting in engine damage.
If you need further assistance please let me know and i will instruct you from there. Thanks, MIDwest-tek

This really sounds like the TPS (throttle position sensor). I ran across it on this web blog:
http://forums.atvconnection.com/polaris/277790-throttle-position-sensor.html
Looks from the blog, that people aren't, generally, impressed by Polaris support, but you might try them, sometimes it depends on the person one deals with, etc.
Here is Polaris' support site:

Good luck, thanks for using FixYa, and please rate this answer if it helped you.

This quad has a carburetor and it's totally messed up - it acts like it's flooded. Take it completely apart and clean it thoroughly then assemble it back using new seals . Be extremely accurate when testing the fuel valve and when you adjust the fuel level in the bowl.

Why is my 2004 polaris predator 500 shutting of while riding it

First be sure to check oil level if you haven't. Many have a low level shut off switch. If the level of oil gets below a certain point it can shut off. Just a thought.
