3 possible causes, you must check them all in this order of probability:
1 - the mixture is too lean - the carburetor is badly adjusted: either the level in the bowl is too low or the needle is maladjusted in the main jet.
2 - the ignition advance is too late.
3 - the timing on the valves is off - camshaft is out of position; also check the gap on the valves.

In that case the former owner maybe didn't took care of it, it might be a worn out carburetor. If you could find a refurbished part to replace it, it would be perfect.

Carb looked good on inside bowl level fine?

  • Azrael SRL Aug 26, 2010

    1 - yes.

2 - take the covers off, manually align the crankshaft to the sign on the carter, look at the sign on the cog wheel on the camshaft and see if the sign aligns with the mark on the head. If it doesn't then remove the chain, align it to match and put back the chain. At least basic experience in engines is necessary, if you don't have it then ask a friend who has done that before to help you. And after that check the gaps

250 trail boss high idle cant ajust

If the screw(s) on the carb make no difference... the throttle cable may need to have slack added... IF there is an adjustment at the handlebar... start there and give it slack -- The throttle should be able to move without revving the engine.... if there is not slack or play... adjust the cable until there is.- the next adjustment is at the top of the carb, where the cable goes in -- ....If this does not help, you may have pinched the throttle cable, or have an air leak or the intake valves are too tight-(usually manifest in a "slow to idle" - "run away idle" situation) .....

Why won't it idle without choke?

Fuel supply problem somewhere. How is the float adjustment and the float valve? I'd guess the level adjustment is too low.

Continuous high idle and idle screw no help

Does your artic cat have a carb cable if so it will have an adjustment or a clamp on the cable where it attaches to the linkage..check make sure it is set to low idle..and your idle screw is adjusted to low idke..meaning cable adjusted to lowest possible position when the throttle is released..then make your final adjustment using you idle screw..good luck

Black smoke at idle but theres no adjustment scews

Adjustment screw is located on bottom of carb in the column right behind where is attaches at the intake. 1 1/2 turns out is a good starting point. Also the choke could be stuck on. That model uses an electric choke. Usually these do not need to be adjusted. Choke removes easily with just a keeper that slides in to hold it. Clean with carb cleaner.

I have a 2003 polaris/330 trail boss with a fuel problem. i had carb rebuilt at a shop .cleaned, new needle & seat installed. new plug, carb vent/ equalizer cleaned, tank vent clean. starts fine, runs...

there's a vent on the carb they might've have missed, the line could be clogged. insects and mud get in them. plus it could be the petcock on the tank. take it out and make sure the screens, are cleaned etc.

Arctic cat 500 dies when you give it gas but idles fine!

You still have a carb issue, doesnt take much trash to chock it out when giving throttle. if you done the carb clean twice, try seafoam, does pretty good at cleaning the carbon out. use it as directed while running. it will smoke bad while preforming this proceedure so dont panic whens it smokes the neighborhood out.
