Question about Polaris ATV

Solenoid is clicking but starter not turning on a polaris xplorer. The starter works when I jump it. Is it the solenoid even though it's clicking when I hit the start switch?

Hi thanks. I figured it out. Stupid me. I didn't re-install the starter before trying it out as I didn't want to have to remove it again if it wasn't the problem. I had taken the starter apart and found a sticking piece (a spring loaded magnet I think?) and cleaned everything which fixed the starter. The problem was that I only hooked up the red wire without GROUNDING the starter to something metal. I figured it out as I was wondering why there was only the red power wire but no negative wire. That's when it dawned on me that the starter is grounded to the engine itself. Sorry, I'm just a backyard mechanic with NO eletrical aptitude.

Power comes on but engine does not turn over or try to start?

If you get a clicking sound, then it is either your starter solenoid or the battery is low. If you simply get nothing, then it is wiring. Use jumper cables and and jump from an external battery. Go "-" to frame and "+" to the battery side of the solenoid. Push the starter button. It should click and send power to the starter. If it doesn't click then the problem lies with the wiring between the solenoid and starter button, or the solenoid itself. If the solenoid did click but the motor didn't turn over, put your "+" jumper cable directly on the starter motor's external contact. If the motor turns over, your problem is your solenoid. If the starter motor refuses to turn over, then your problem is the starter motor.

If battery has good charge on it, I would suspect either starter selonoid or starter itself. With it in neutral and key on, try taking a jumper wire from hot side of battery directly to starter. if starter turns over I would replace selonoid.

400 polaris xplorer 4x4

Hey Randy,
Sounds like the battery needs to be replaced. Take the battery to O'Reilly, Autozone, Advance Auto and have the CCA, (Cold Cranking Amps) checked..(load test).. this will tell you whether the battery is good or not. When you get a new battery.. make sure the connections are clean and tight..put a little heavy grease on the connections to prevent corrosion. This should fix your problem.

When I push the starter button the solenoid clicks, starter does nothing.if I cross the 2 threaded bolts that extend out from the solenoid the starter engages? I just replaced the solenoid and at first it...

Just because it's new, doesn't mean it works.
This is why cars get recalled.

The iron-clan test of a non-working solenoid is to cross the relay terminals. If you do and it starts.. it's bad.

Take it back. you purchased a dud. It happens.
