Why does engine overheating light come on after only a few minutes without fan ever turning on?

There are 2 sensors for temperature. One near T stat housing for ECU reading. Other one in water passage for the light. The ECU turns the fan on by tripping the fan relay. The light comes on to tell you it's too hot. Check fan to make sure it turns. Check fan fuse to make sure it's not blown. Unplug fan motor and hot wire it to make sure it runs. If it does, locate fan relay and swap it with one of the others with the same numbers on it to see if fan comes on when engine heats up. If fan cycles normally the temp light sensor is probably bad.

Should the oil temp. Light come on when you turn t on or only when there is a problem

Hello Jeanne:
Lots of motorcycles, atv's, and other vehicles warning lights come on when you first turn the key. They are just saying hi and letting you know that they are there to do their job. When the machine is started, the warning lights should go off within a few moments. If they stay on, or come on when you are operating the vehicle, then you have some checking to do before you continue running it.
Hope this helps.

What has to be rmoved on a 2003 Yamaha Kodiak 400 ATV to be able to remove the radiator fan motor ?

Usually the fan motor.remove the motor. take the 2 bolts out that hold the back plate with the brushes off. If the brushes are stuck in,clean and oil them. Replace the plate and check the motor with a battery charger.

ok two reasons here. 1st being the oil temp sensor or wiring to it from fan.test sensor when eng light is on . wire to sensor must be disconnected..ohms test. to grnd on atv. open or closed. now retest when eng is cold same test as b4. open or closed? if different reading assume sensor is ok. check wiring same way. can do wires eng cold btw. should find a relay for the fan on atv also thats part 2. be a small prolly black box near battery compartment (dry location) (up high ) trace wire from fan to relay then to sensor . pretty simple there . same as b4 either open or closed when hot and different when cold is ok if different. as always CHECK FUSES FIRST. CONNECTIONS SECOND. 95 % electrical ......dirty / bad connections.

Honda atv troubleshooting. My honda atv. Is air cooled getting hot really fast. An. Boiling the oil out.. Why ? Thx .

Check your carberutor - make sure you have the proper air fuel mixture - running too lean (without enough actual gasoline) will cause the bike to run hot - but even more common than that is an ignition issue - either a bad plug, rectifier, coil etc. something not giving the proper spark or something with your cdi - best to check the plug, then power coming from coil, check rectifier, your timing could be off as well - but i've seen the lean issue and iginition electrical issue be the main causes of an engine running super hot like that.

Fan wont turn on

Sounds like a thermostat issue....inspect the rad and you should see a thermostat with wires ...check for corrosion on the terminals.

You will have to get the cooling fan working before you look any further. It may be best to have a coolant system pressure test and a compression test done to eliminate engine fault also
