The ATV needs maintenance. If you have done the standard maintenance for the number of hours of use, then the maintenance counter should be reset. This may depend on the model of your ATV, check your documentation. For an example, see the manual for the 700 Honda ATV: https://cdn.powersports.honda.com/documentum/MWOM/ml.remawmom.2016_31hl3620_sxs700m2_m4.pdf . Page 14 shows the maintenance minder light and the reset for this model. Page 93 starts the section on the needed maintenance. On this ATV, there are three slightly different maintenance routines. One is the initial maintenance (20 hours) then two routine lifetime that will alternate over the use of the ATV.
Jim, you need a manual,Check the attached links,Manuals and guides, Good luck with your ATV

Typically reverse is much more common on ATVs that are made for work, not really ones just for playing with (just one more thing to go wrong).

A utility ATV is the most popular kind of ATV in the US. It is the biggest type of ATV and is used for many purposes like emergency services and professional racing. For more information on utility ATV\'s, check out this website: http://4wheeldrive.about.com/od/atvbuyersguide/a/atv_type_utility.htm.
Solution#1 worked perfectly. It only took about 15 minutes all together. the side panel removes easily. It just slides out of the other panel. Once you have removed the handle (Shifter) and the other two bracket bolts, just place it back into the shifter housing and move it around. I was amazed at how easy this was to repair. I also turned the ignition to the on position to see if it was changing gears and it was. Solution #1 repost originally posted by Jpach I tried this today and it worked. Pull the sideplate from the ATV so
that you have access to the gear shifter assembly. Unbolt the gearshift
assembly from the mounting bracket. There are two bolts at the rear
near the two rods that exit the assembly and three on the bottom. When
the bolts are out, remove the assembly from the mounting bracket. Hold
it in your hand and move the shift lever through all of the positions.
This won't actually shift the transmission, but it should free up the
rods in the assembly. Remount the assembly with the five bolts and it
should now be able to shift out of reverse.
