I'm not familiar with your vehicle, but if it was a road car I would guess at:
Oxygen sensor
Failed catalytic converter
Cylinder head problem.
There's either an air/fuel mixture problem finding its way into your muffler (and is burning inside it) or red-hot exhaust gases (because of a head problem) finding their way direct into the pipe.
I would doubt that there's too much fuel as such - an over supply of fuel tends to 'choke' and make an engine sluggish. A weak mixture - ie, too much air for the amount of fuel - causes overheating.
If you can, check for air leaks - air being drawn into the fuel system. This can cause overheating, though I can't say I've ever come across a muffler glowing red hot because of it.
Then again .. if it's running at half power, that does suggest an over -rich fuel/air mixture
