My lawn tractor with a Kawasaki engine had the same problem. I found that the linkage for the gas throttle had a lot of dirt on it and would not let the throttle close completely. So when I shut off the warm engine, gas leaked into the cylinder. It would take a lot of cranking to start. When it did start, the exhaust put out black smoke.
Have you checked to see if you are getting spark at the plug? Look in your manual to see if there is a low oil pressure safety shut down switch that has to be reset.
when engines not running turn the gas off . And it sounds like you need to adjust your throttle pin that goes into the carb take the clip off the pin and move it down one good luck
