Question about ATVs
Not 100 % on this however I know the 4 wheel drive on most Polaris atv's is activated with a shifter and a electronic part as well. I have had several friends who said when they had battery issues or a bad wire somewhere in the 4x4 actuation cylinder that the 4 wheel drive would work intermittently. I would suggest checking all the wires on the system to see if you have a break somewhere that is grounding out the feed after you hit some bumps and get the quad wet while riding. Good luck and let me know if this helps?

SOURCE: 500 scrambler stuck in gear
i had a similiar problem on my 500 sportsman. when pressure is against the bike it is hard to shift out of gear. also, sometimes the linkages get siezed and need a little lube or the gear selector may be froze up. try taking some lube and spraying all these. if the bike sat up for awhile these may be the case, but if not then you need to have it looked into, as the transmission might have damage internally.
