A typical, fully charged & unloaded 12 volt lead acid battery should indicate about 12.6 V. Check the voltage / percent charge chart below:

Volts - Charge
11.7 - 10%
11.9 - 20%
12.1 - 30%
12.25 - 40%
12.35 - 50%
12.45 - 60%
12.5 - 70%
12.6 - 100

A fully charged that is only about 12V indicates a a problem with the battery - dead / shorted cells, etc. You can always remove the battery and have it tested at Autozone or similar auto parts stores if you're unsure. From the info you've provided - my guess is that the battery is "done"

I hope this was helpful - good luck!

Testimonial: "I have put 3 batteries on the machine from other working/running machines and all the batteries keep going dead. If the stator is bad would it charge at all? The other machines do charge up the batteries mine run down is why I'm wondering."

With this added info, it now sounds like there isn't enough power created by the vehicle's charging / electrical system to fully charge the battery. Basically, the battery's job is to start the motor. After that, the vehicle's charging / electrical system assume the power requirements for ignition, lights, all electrically operated accessories *and* charging the battery. If the charging / electrical system can not provide enough power to fulfill these duties, the battery makes up the difference until the battery is eventually depleted. Have your charging / electrical system & voltage regulator checked out. I would expect about 14 VDC from a working charging system.

Yamaha 450 Kodiak battery not charging, new battery, volt meter not showing any voltage going to the battery

Hi Brian, get a digital volt meter and start the ATV measure the voltage at the battery or at the alternator it should read around 14 volts when charging, if it reads 12 volts the charging system is not working, check or a blown fuse or broken wire, if you can access the alternator directly measure at that point. It takes 14 volt output from the alternator to charge a 12 volt battery

2004 polaris ranger battery not staying charged when operating but when engine is off battery not affected cutting out and dying what could be the problem?

battery is being drained as it operates and not taking charge

check tightness and clean both terminals and cables

how old is the battery
may have a dead cell ..wont take charge

check the charging input to the battery with a volt meter
has to be above 12 volts
if lower or equal to 12 volts ...no good
the charging stator inside the engine needs testing or repair or replace

stator is another word for an alternator or a generator

why it plays up
best guess the ATV if a 12 volts system wont run on 11 volts

New battery, new solenoid.... turn key display lights come on but will not ignite. Do not get a click or anything.

Sounds like your new battery was not charged when it was sold to you. Put it on a 12 volt charger for 6 hours.

What could be the problem my gator wont hold a charge

Several possible things. The alternator has a fault and discharges when at rest. Try unplugging the alt and see what happens when parked.
Its a 2006 so is the battery less than 2 years old? If not , have it checked. Batt life on a machine such as this is 4 years at best.
Remove the negative cable with everything switched off then touch the post and see if there is any sort of spark. If there is remove the fuses one at a time and see if it stops, this may point to a particular circuit which may have a trapped wire or stuck relay. Alternatively get an electrician with a clip on ammeter to test the current draw across the cable and post. It may be too small to spark but still cause a steady drain. While you have the sparky to hand, test the alternator output by measuring the volts across the battery posts. Should be 12-13v static(charged) and peak 14-14.5v at fast idle. If its 12 or less running, its dead

Honda rancher AT makes click noise and will not start except manual???

Actually it sounds like the solenoid is working fine. The clicking you are hearing is the solenoid when it's energized by you turning the ignition key and giving it power from the battery. I would trouble shoot the starter. Start by checking if there is 12 volts at the terminal on the starter. If you're getting 12 volts there, your starter needs to be replaced or rebuilt.
Good luck

Arctic cat 400 won't start. Starts if you hold down starter button then cuts off when you let off the starter button.

You will burn the brushes in the starter out if you continue to do that. Try adjusting the idle screw in a little. It's probably on the carburetor.

Fuses on honda atv trx 400fw alternator

If after starting and while it is running disconnect the battery...if it still runs then the alternator is working. Also you can connect a volt meter accross the battery and it should read 13-15 volts if working.

I have a 2012 yamaha 300 grizzly and it will noy charge, I have replaced the battery with a new one and it just drains the battery and it will quit after running for about a hour.Is there a way to check...

Yes, Get a GOOD multimeter. Set it to any DC voltage over 12 volts. (2 people makes this a lot easier!) Crank the engine and put the leads red-red (positive to positive) and then black-black.(negative to negative) on the battery. There should be around 12.4v - 12.5v on idle, when you rev the engine to about 4K rpm+ you should see around 13.5 volts. If not seeing more that 12.8v over 4k rpm you need to find a factory service manual to troubleshoot the problem. Until you see 13.5 or a little higher you will never have it "fixed".
