The most common causes of a water cooled engine overheating are (1) poor circulation of cooling fluid (bad water pump or stopped up radiator); or (2) inadequate air flow cooling (bad cooling fan); or (3) compression gases entering the cooling system (leaking head gasket or cracked block or head). The first check is to see if air is in the cooling fluid (small bubbles appearing in top of radiator or coolant reserve tank). If so, then #3 is the problem. The second check is to see if the cooling fan (s) is running properly (can feel air flow on output side?). If not check wiring and/or replace fan (#2). The last step is to drain the radiator and engine (turn over engine to allow water pump to empty the block). If additional cooling fluid does not drain out the radiator drain port, the water pump is defective. If the water pump does empty the block, then flush the system with a good flushing agent. Follow instructions on flushing agent bottle. Drain out the flushing agent and re-fill radiator and block with clear water. Run engine as per instructions on flush agent bottle. Drain system again and re-fill with antifreeze (50%) and water (50%). If vehicle is located in a very cold climate, then increase the antifreeze % up to 75% (25% water). Remember, not only does antifreeze help to keep water from freezing, but it also helps to increase cooling ability.
First check coolant level and correct if low. Sometimes this is all it is. If not, the cooling fan comes on due to a water temp sensor switch. Local auto parts place AutoZone, O'Reilly, Advance can help you find it. Probably bad. The other problem of dead battery is something staying on after car is shut off. Look for aftermarket electronics wired to a non-switched source.
Sounds like your heat sensor is bad most are attached to the radiator in the Cooling fins..to make sure the fans are not the problem..after the engine is warm enough to turn on the fans locate the sensor and unplug it then using a jumper wire "paper clip or any small wire " as a bypass connect the two wires together "the plug end" the turn on the switch..the fans should run as long as the switch is in the on position..if it does your sensor needs replaced...note if you are out where there is no help and the fans are shutting off and the engine is running hot..just bypass the sensor until you can replace it..Just make sure it shuts off with your ignition switch off..or the battery will drain..good luck
Its probably the head gaskets. When you do the compression test its not running and the holes in the gasket could seal up. When it gets hot a hole could appear in the gasket or even a crack in the head.
Its clear from the rising coolant levels that something is putting pressure into the coolant, do the bubbles in the coolant smell of fuel?
