Question about John Deere Trail Buck 650 EXT ATVs
First problem when start button pushed it may or may not start. Then when trying to start the starter relay would just click, click, click. Since battery was old, we replaced it. Same problem. Cleaned all the cables we could reach. No help. Replaced with new battery. No help. Installed new starter. No help. From the clicking noise of the relay, I was able to find it and clean the dirt from it and clean the terminals. One wire was loose, which I tightened. The next time I turned on the ignition the panel lights didn't even light, just dead same as the switch not even turned one. Between the time of the last relay clicking and the next ignition switch turn on nothing was done??? About to give up and take it to a shop.
Had this happen and it was simply the ground right off the battery. John Deere put it right on the frame rail beside the battery and it gets corroded from being in mud and water.Relocate it to a higher point along with the other wires.

The solenoid for the ignition and starter has failed. Also remember the brake has to be applied to activate the starter system.

Remove battery terminals and clean both posts and terminals
with sandpaper until you see shiny metal. The black coating is lead sulphate which has a high resistance to current flow both into and out of the battery. Charge the battery as not all batteries are charged sufficiently when new to do the job. Also not all new batteries are good batteries as they suffer manufacturing faults which allow them to discharge internally. some batteries are sold without the acid so check that is not the case.. Check all terminal connections including any earth wires.

Testimonial: "This happened once before and was taken to dealer. Rats had chewed some wires also. Looked at ticket and they put on a new wiring harness is all. I put all new relays in unit and didn't make any difference. There is something little that has me screwed up. Like a small ground wire or something to that nature. I do have 12.6 volts at coil. Where can I get a manual at? Thanks"
