Question about RTO 200cc Full Size Four Wheeler ATV

Open Question

I have a 2005 can-am DS650 with an air fuel mixture problem. Did an adjustment on the valve shims and is in good timing, can gat it to run but it goes hot after 2-3 mins of running. Problem is that I am running to lean and if I go to make it rich it will not even start at all. I live around 5000 feet and the air temp is 70 Degrease. I think my jets are 165main and stock needle. I ran good 2 years ago but due to a past deployment left fuel in the carb and got gunked up. cleaned the carb and the quad started running. Let it run for a few and the over flow tank let loose. Please help.

Why is my bike backfiring?

a back fire on a bike is usually the cause of timing being out or damaged carburettor ( too much petrol going through ) in the case of the carb you can adust the air screw to see if that helps ( small screw in the side of the carb ) screw it right in and then bring it out 1 and a half turns ,this will get you very close to the right mixture. in the case of timing being out you will need to take the fly wheel off and adjust the stator plate ( turn it to the timing marks ) as a rule its usually . back fire through the exhaust is timing, back fire through the carb is fuel mixture. if you rev it when it starts and it pops through the exhaust the problem is within the fly wheel . if it pops through the carb the problem is with mixture.

Why won't it idle without choke?

Fuel supply problem somewhere. How is the float adjustment and the float valve? I'd guess the level adjustment is too low.

We are having a problem with the Polaris 500 - it runs backfires and then have to crank it again. On a cold start we have to choke it, small amount on the throttle and do it several times. It will...

The number 1 problem with ATVs is the carburetor. This could be a mixture problem... too rich will cause backfiring and difficulty starting as the carb needs more air. Try leaning it down a 1/8 turn. The choke is always intended to be used when starting; if you don't need to use the choke, the card is definitely running too rich. If you can't adjust to make it behave properly, then rebuild the carb, It's not difficult.. get a new throttle spring and float too. Ensure you place the keeper clip on the correct groove of the needle valve... where the throttle cable connects. Replace all the jets and gaskets... don;t get them mixed up. One larger jet is the primary jet and the smaller one, is the secondary. Get new screws, if the screws are a bit dog eared. Write down your previous mixture settings and start from there to adjust the mixture for starting and assure a slightly skipped idle. (Don't worry as you add throttle it will run smoothly.)

Econ Quad Viper 70 4 stroke won't stay running unless choke is one quarter or more closed. Occasionally pops through carb and bogs down if accelerated.

Sounds like you need a valve adjustment, if it is popping thru the carb, the intake valve is open at the wrong time, this can be caused by three things, too much gas, timing is wrong (stretched chain) or valves too tight not allowing valve to close. I would adjust valves first.

Hi Linda... Clogged carb jets and be a problem. Cleaning them is often very difficult due to the size of the orifice. sometimes welding tip cleaners or sewing needles may work. Forcing air is a good way but the acid test is to look into the orifice to verify you see light.

Another thought: Sometimes the fuel caps stops venting and the motor will act like its running out of power, rightfully so as it's running out of fuel. The vent in the fuel cap can be partially plugged or completely and the engine will act accordingly. Best way to test this is to remove the fuel line after the petcock(off/on valve) and watch that it flows fuel well. Also check the petcock filter to verify it's not clogged and check the fuel line to make sure it's not crimped.

You're problem doesn't sound electrical but I'd try to eliminate all fuel related problems first before moving to electrical as electrical trouble shooting can be a bear.

The air mixture adj screw sometimes has an "O" ring and sometimes not. Check with parts fiche for your model carb to know which.

My Suzuki Eiger 400 starts hard then once running is great.

The carburetor choke valve might be stuck open or not closing when the engine is cold. The engine needs a richer mixture to start. Too rich a mixture (flooding) can also cause trouble. Turn the fuel valve off to be sure the carb isn't leaking when not in use. If it smokes black on startup, it's flooding. Also check the condition of the spark plugs.

Wont stay running just dies out when you give it gas

it is a problem with either or both the fuel mixture coming out of the carby or poor quality fuel. use premium 95 octane to help it and you might need to adjust the screws on the carby to generate a better fuel air mix
