Main jet dirty. Likely Ethanol fuel fouling. Remove and clean jet. Check all rubber tubing to/from carb for cracks/deterioration and replace.

Testimonial: "Thanks, I had a feeling it was fuel related, this 4 wheeler is hardly used aside from plowing snow and is kept inside all year round, it only has like 12-15 hours on it and was purchased new."

Yes. Fuel with Ethanol will break down after about 30 days absorbing water. Use a fuel additive to preserve the gas will prevent this problem.

2 stroke or 4? if 2 stroke definitely jetted wrong choking makes it rich tells me your main jet is too lean (smaller hole) you need to pull carb check jets for plugage clean jets write down numbers check dealer for correct jet size for your elevation if 4 stroke back fire thru carb indicates timing is off or bad intake valves or cam lobe worn

Wheeler wont stay running even after it's warmed up. Choking it won't keep it running either. This just started the other day. No issues up to this point.

Remove the play in the throttle by loosening the locking pin on the cable, then pull the cable tight to remove the play and refix the locking nut. Once the play is removed adjust the jet so that its steady at idle.

Why does my ATV bog down and die when I keep the throttle wide open?

If you are lucky, you might just need new fuel filter and the fuel bowl cleaned out, and maybe new air filter. If not so lucky you need carburetor rebuilt. Backfire is usaully caused by engine running too lean ( too much air for the amount of fuel present). Fuel bowls get gunk in them and the fuel needles and fuel jets get varnished up. The accelerator pump gets worn out gaskets and/or bellows and doesn't give the right amount of fuel mist when you accelerate.

We are having a problem with the Polaris 500 - it runs backfires and then have to crank it again. On a cold start we have to choke it, small amount on the throttle and do it several times. It will...

The number 1 problem with ATVs is the carburetor. This could be a mixture problem... too rich will cause backfiring and difficulty starting as the carb needs more air. Try leaning it down a 1/8 turn. The choke is always intended to be used when starting; if you don't need to use the choke, the card is definitely running too rich. If you can't adjust to make it behave properly, then rebuild the carb, It's not difficult.. get a new throttle spring and float too. Ensure you place the keeper clip on the correct groove of the needle valve... where the throttle cable connects. Replace all the jets and gaskets... don;t get them mixed up. One larger jet is the primary jet and the smaller one, is the secondary. Get new screws, if the screws are a bit dog eared. Write down your previous mixture settings and start from there to adjust the mixture for starting and assure a slightly skipped idle. (Don't worry as you add throttle it will run smoothly.)

My 98 arctic cat 500 has fuel and spark and wont run

rebuild the carb, include a new float and throttle spring and replace any dog eared screws. The kit comes with a new needle valve and two jets and all the gaskets. Take you time and replace all the parts. Be careful to put the keeper clip (ring) on the proper groove on the needle valve and extra care when bending the float arm to proper travel specs... they will break off if you are rough. Write down the mixture settings and use those as your starting point to readjust the mixture. The engine is designed to use choke when starting and should have a slight skip when idling that smooths out when adding throttle.

Why does my yamaha 660 only run if the choke is on? What causes it to backfire?

Most of the time it's because the Pilot/Idle jet is clogged in the carburetor. This most often happens because of old fuel sitting in the carburetor during long periods of sitting and non-use. The fuel forms a varnish - a gummy layer inside of your carburetor and clogs the tiny holes in the idle jet. Since fuel can't get through, the engine dies. The hole for the choke is larger, therefore the fuel can still get through it.
