Could be short or faulty switch .look around for bare wires touching metal.,ext ext., test switches., maby battery to low to run bike as well... charge it or get new one .,.try them , and we can go from there
The timing is not adjustable. I would start with a clean air filter, clean carb, good spark plug, check and make sure that your cam timing matches your flywheel.

is it running out of gas? backfire is caused by a lean condition. I'd check the fuel path from the tank to the carb and clean the carbs. could have something floating around in there occasionally blocking fuel flow.
