I have this same issue on my 2002 but only happens if you leave the gas on. I assume the needle and seat is worn but not sure if there is a bad valve or ring.

start atv up and check that it is charging the battery at the battery around 13.5v roughly, then when off check battery is not losing voltage with every thing turned off ( can buy cheap little multi-meters).

A common problem on that machine is the charge wire from the LR (think voltage regulator) corrodes and breaks. The LR is located down
around the radiator and has several yellow and red wires coming out of
it. It usually is a red wire that breaks there. If that isn't it then
check your stator. Keep us updated.
