WIndows Installer - again

I have the same thing happening as others have reported.

I have Vista Ultimate and I have tried restoring to the furthest in the restore history with no luck.

I then found a few forum posts via Google searches that walked me through group policies - no good.... this bug won't stop that easy

I tried downloading the windows installer as per the instructions given here and it went through without requiring safe mode, so I thought all was well

Unfortunately the problem is still present and worse... now a new one has arrived: If I right-click on any shortcut to an application (not a folder or the recycle bin) everything except the wallpaper disappears! The same thing happens if I highlight a file in windows explorer and then click on "file" in the explorer window.

The only way to get the computer working after the above is the old CTRL+ALT+DEL and logoff/logon

PS I've done a thorough virus scan with both AVG and Avast

Any help most welcome
Thanks,
Tony

Hi golu - as I said I'm *not* having a problem with *installation* of Windows, but the Windows Installer application itself.

It is normal, after a C:\ drive format, to lose all your information from that partition, including last known configuration and system restore points. If you weren't able to enter Windows 7 Ultimate do a clean reinstall. Also, immediately after Windows installation, install the latest drivers.
If something else happened, please let me know so I can tell you what to do.

I uninstall something to my laptop i cnt remember what it is, then when i insert my headphones it doesnt work but when its working on headphones my laptop doesnt work, what should i do?

Perform a "System Restore" This is the best option; it will “restore the system” back to a previous state, to undo the change. 1. Go, to: "Control Panel". 2. Click System and Maintenance. 3. Click Backup and Restore Center. 4. In the (left) Tasks area, click on Repair Windows using System Restore.” 5. The restore “Wizard” appears. 6. Choose (Recommended) Restore Point. Important! If this, restore point fail? Try again using a different “restore point.” Find the “furthest” (Date) prior to when your computer was functioning normal. 7. Follow all instructions thereafter. *Note: “Once the computer returns to Windows Desktop, “do not perform any tasks, for at least (45 min) the System Restore is still “running. “ I hope this Fix it.

Upgrade to vista ultimate

If you have a full version of Windows Vista Ultimate, you can just insert the DVD when you logged in your laptop and go to Computer(My Computer) and lauch the installer for Windows on DVD icon (Double Click DVD icon). It will give you the main window for installing Windows and along the way, you should find an Upgrade option. Click that one and it will install windows Ultimate on your system. It Will not format the laptop but installer will just add system files and features to the laptop to run Vista Ultimate.

**If you haven't purhcase a Windows Vista Ultimate Disc, check this link to to purchase just an upgrade Disc (only) of Vista Ultimate.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/anytime-upgrade-overview.aspx

An upgrade disc will also not format the laptop instead it will just install additional features and add additional files on the system to run Windows Vista Ultimate

I'm Having problem with Vista, not detecting Pen Drive

Unplug the pen drive before booting (newer laptops support booting from a USB drive, and they restore your "healthy restore point".

Format the Pen drive from Disk Management (right click on computer, choose manage, select Disk Management) to 32 bit fat, this leaves it compatible with Windows 98 SE, but the 16 Bit seems to give Vista fits. Good luck.

In Vista Home Premium, Taskbar, there is no restore windows to original configuration.

So, basically you want all of your windows to come up at once, but in the location with the size you opened them in?

First, you'd have to open Tools->Folder options (speaking from an XP standpoint; I can't remember the Vista menuing), then click the View tab, and check the boxes for "Remember each folder's view settings" and "Restore previous folder windows at logon". Click apply to all folders, then when you reopen everything, you can press Windows+D to show the desktop then press it again to restore everything.  There is no right-click option for what you're trying to do, but what I'm suggesting is the closest thing to it.
